Just another reason why I need a multi-region BluRay player.

I wonder if this means the Von Sternberg silents are about to return to Criterion's catalog.

Such wonderful news.
In the meantime I will wait until, perhaps it will be released along with Docks Of New York and Underworld.
For now, my Criterion DVD set keeps me satisfied.

I hope the MoC version will include the wonderful Gaylord Carter accompaniment that was on the original VHS.

Eureka! :D I'm hoping MoC commissioned an appropriately atmospheric orchestral score for this BD release (fingers crossed), but Gaylord Carter's organ accompaniment would be a nice alternative.

Review: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-ray_ ... lu-ray.htm

It's so soft in detail... Am I correct to presume that just 16mm copies survived ?
Keep thinking...

Beggars can't be choosers....

I was hoping for something better, but this one has been tops on my list ever since BLU RAY came out and I wanted to upgrade my VHS. No doubt I am ordering.

I screened this last night... WHAT A FANTASTIC FILM! The acting is incredible, particularly Emil Jannings. His performance showed layer after layer of nuance, and the ending completely blew my socks off. Von Sternberg's direction was fantastic too. Every shot was staged and composed beautifully, without feeling like it was trying to hard or losing spontaneity. The montage in the riot scenes was great too. This may be one of the greatest silent films I've ever seen.

The blu-ray is a little bare bones. Just an organ score, but it follows the calls for specific music in the film, and lays back enough to let the film speak for itself. The print they used for the transfer isn't perfect. It has density some problems, even in the title cards, which are usually corrected with video freezes and paintbox. But in motion it isn't at all bothersome. The sharpness is only a little bit above the resolution of a DVD, but the grayscale is perfect. For me, the contrast levels are the most important thing. If the blacks are black and the whites are white and there's a wide range of grays in-between, I can enjoy watching it. And I certainly enjoyed watching this one.

I had a few friends over for Memorial Day dinner, and we decided that a Russian war picture was the thing to watch. When it came to THAT ENDING! WOW! A gasp came out of every person in the room. I'm going to watch this one again soon. I recommend this disc.

An amazing film! I literally just finished watching it. I bought The Masters Of Cinema series Blu-Ray version from 2016. It has to be said also that Evelyn Brent also gives perhaps the best performance of her life in this film.

Although it's a blu-ray, it is extremely grainy, and soft. Am I correct in saying this is taken from a 16mm dupe? And perhaps the original negative no longer exists? Any information on where this print comes from?

I, too, am curious as to source of the print used for this marvelous release and whether it is indeed 16mm as seems to be the case. Do we know if Underworld and The Docks of New York have 35mm prints or 16mm? No original negatives either?

I'm pretty sure these are all made from 35mm elements from Paramount (at least the Criterion Collection versions are). Alloy toured with a new 35mm prints of the Last Command and Underworld for years. They came direct the Paramount archive.

That's not the silent - it's the 1955 film of the same title (no connection).
