Great news, I'll have to lift my personal ban on buying new movies for the time being for this one.

The specs say Region B. I am assuming in the US you need a region free player for this movie?

Yes, if it actually is Region B.

Any idea on who did the music for this edition?

According to the Eureka website - 'Two scores - one by Stephen Horne and one by the Tiger Lillies'.

It appears that both the American and German cuts will be included.

As long as there's one NOT by the Tiger Lilies!

Hasn't an American release already been announced, with music by the Berklee student orchestra? If you're in the US and worried about the region, I'd wait for that one. And the Berklee score is quite good (as, no doubt, will be the Stephen Horne one).

Stephen Horne performed his score at the Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema this year, along with percussionist Frank Bockius. It was absolutely stunning with many audience members saying it was the highlight of the festival for them, so you're in for a treat! I'm delighted too as I was running around organising other events and had to miss it so now I get a chance to catch it.

So it was and I would say I missed the news except I commented on it at the time... okay, so now we have a variety of Varietes to choose from.

I have finally got around to unwrapping my copy. Just now checking out the Johannes Contag score, which is excellent. Really interesting to compare the differences and similarities to my duo version. The score by the Berklee student orchestra performed at SFSFF last year was also great and I hope it gets recorded for posterity. The Great God Google informs me that even the Tiger Lillies have their defenders... but then it's their music that is credited onscreen at the end, whichever score you listen too!

Looks like being a good year for DuPont (in the UK) just spotted this coming from Network DVD (on both DVD and Blu Ray.)

Moulin Rouge (1928)
Director: Ewald André Dupont
Stars: Olga Tschechowa, Eve Gray, Jean Bradin
Parysia is the rage of Paris. She has a daughter, secretly engaged to Andre, and the boy's aristocratic father objects to the alliance because of Margaret's mother being a revue artist.

No idea who the restoration is by, or if there will be a newly recorded score or the synchronised score from the 1929 rerelease, or both. But a definite buy for me.

Not to be confused with other films called Moulin Rouge...

What is the running time of Variete? I see 95 and 112 minutes. What gives? Don't want to buy a short version. Thanks.

The Eureka disc has two versions... the complete original German version and the US cut which is shorter.

In other words, it's the PG-13 version (European edit) and the PG version (U.S. edit).

Got mine today and it is fantastic...after years of looking at grainy, washed out prints and dupes this one is crystal clear....first Napoleon now Variete....makes having a region free player a must. If you have any doubts....forget about them and get this version...the price is also very low. So happy I ordered.....will be watching again later.....
