I got Battallion a couple of days ago but haven't watched it yet. I have some Czech silents with a good quality so I believe this is also restored well. I'm trying to find time to watch it before New Year and give some comments about the film and restoration.

Does the Batallion DVD have English subtitles for the intertitles?

Such Is Life (The Story of a Prague Washerwoman) (Takový je život) (1928) will be released on DVD (Blu-ray?) in April 2017.

Isn't there an easier way of getting these discs?

Saint-Just, they have an online store. Easy to use with google-translate.

How do you pay? I puzzled out most of the Czech on the order forms, but I never saw anything related to a payment method.

I think they only support bank transfer.

This is not problem if one is in EU but if not like me that it is not so easy job because of exorbitant bank's fee. I managed to pay with virtual Visa card and TransferWise.

Same here - if bank transfer is the only option then I suppose I'll have to reluctantly live without them - unless someone who has bought successfully from them would consent to act as a go-between for me.

There's a seller on amazonUK who has several Czech NFA discs for sale:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_no ... ywords=DVD" target="_blank

I didn't find Batalion there, or the animated film set, but I did find a couple of other silents from the Czech archive.

The animated set can be found here: https://bookstore.artmap.cz/en/2079-3-d ... -1925-1945

OK, I just spent far too long trying to figure all this out. If someone could do a nice little summary of what silents to get and how to get them for this Yankee I would appreciate it. ;)

I echo Battra92's sentiments. I've never been able to figure out how to order from these European archives that only accept bank transfers. I've had the same problem trying to order from Cineteca Italiana. I'd love to support the efforts of these organizations.

Anyone in the US figure out how to make this work?

I ordered a couple of blu-rays from the Karel Zeman museum and it wasn't this difficult. I'll order DVDs from them again, but this was too much trouble and expense.

The animated set can be found here: https://bookstore.artmap.cz/en/2079-3-d ... -1925-1945

This is not the archive site, and from what I can see you can pay by credit card here.

http://nfa.cz/en/e-shop/films/?a=10119

http://nfa.cz/en/e-shop/films/?a=16337

Both of the above are silents and can be bought on amazon uk.

I bought both Erotikon (the Machaty one) and Tonka of the Gallows via an Amazon seller called Czechmovie.

Both are official releases, pretty good if not Criterion-stellar quality, but more than good enough to satisfy interest in these films. Shipping via this seller, whoever he/she is, was quick. So if you can find these titles through Czechmovie, order in confidence. There's contact info at Amazon as well, so if there's a title you want and don't see, you might ask him/her about it.

I watched Ikarie XB-1 once online long ago, and it's pretty obvious Stanley Kubrick watched it too.

I bought Krakatit and The White Plague somewhere (I think from Sinister Cinema) several yrs ago and I cannot recommend them enough. Krakatit, which is a science fiction/mystery made in immediate-postwar Central Europe, is especially fascinating. Both films are provocative, full of moral dilemmas, and of great historical interest.

About the lost Melles film...

What are the chances of Flicker Alley doing a Blu Ray set with that film, newly found missing footage, and better quality prints that were discovered since the last two DVD sets were released.

I also got the Erokiton and Tonka this week from Czechmovies and it had a card in it touting for business. I have bought from Serbia before and still get their e-mails. They offer more modern films and TV shows and the used to tell me that the rest of Europe was lazy not putting English subtitles on so many releases and thus losing a lot of sales. I can only agree with that. I got the French Criterion Marius/Fanny Pagnol Blu Ray set today which replaces my laserdisc copies still buried here in my home. Now to see a link for those silent Paramount WC Fields.

My previous post was not completely appropriate here because only Such is Life is a silent movie. There are now links for purchase in the official NFA store.
OT I don't know why moviepas mentioned Serbia in his post but I'll make another thread for some Serbian releases (Blu-rays?!) which comes out of thin air as soon as I get them.

NFA presented silent movie Hríchy lásky (1929) at the 52nd International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary.
Also NFA has signed a contract with Janus Films for cinema screening of more than thirty Czech classics in North America. Furthemore, all the films will gradually appear in the Criterion Collection.
