ROLAND WEST'S THE BAT - The "secret actor"

PostWed May 10, 2017 1:59 pm

I am finishing up my book on Roland West's 1926 silent film "The Bat" and stumbled onto something completely unknown. Another actor was cast in the role of the character Richard Fleming, who was the nephew of the bank President in the film. The man we see in the role, Arthur Housman (who's the guy who gets shot on the staircase) was a replacement. West had already shot some scenes with this original actor, and for some reason this man was let go, replaced by Housman, and those scenes re-shot. Seems like there was mystery to the making of this movie beyond just the storyline in the play!
