It's official: the new Undercrank Productions restoration of Marion Davies in When Knighthood Was In Flower on Blu-ray/DVD will be released by on July 25. Amazon pre-ordering is not possible, but the Amazon page is live here.

Also available on Amazon on July 25 will be releases of The Bride's Play and Beauty's Worth, released by Undercrank Prods. in association with Ed Lorusso. If you backed Ed's Kickstarters for these two films, I can tell you that the Undercrank DVD edtions have a much higher bitrate and slightly improved sharpness, and also have chapter stops. Also, on The Bride's Play I have reinstated the film's original pink/blue/amber tinting scheme based on tinting slugs in the preservation neg, and on Beauty's Worth I did scene-by-scene exposure correction on most of the film. Ed's backers will be getting a discount code for these titles. Amazon pages for these two DVDs will go live in a couple weeks.

Kudos to all who pledged, supported and worked on these projects!

Ben

Any chance any discs will be available for purchase at Capitolfest (maybe through Jack Theakson)?

Didn't know there was a "dealers room" at Capitolfest.

Yes, they started it after Syracuse ended.
There is a very large dealer room there now.

Any chance if sending some discs?

I don't know if this is possible. I can't attend Capitolfest this year and don't know anyone with a table.

I have been in touch with Art Pierce, and have arranged for this! There will be copies of KNIGHTHOOD available for purchase at Capitolfest – as well as THE THREE MUSKETEERS and FOUND AT MOSTLY LOST. Thanks for the suggestion, Agnes!

When Knighthood Was in Flower is available now on Amazon as are Ben's editions of my Kickstarter projects, The Bride's Play and Beauty's Worth.

I have not seen the latter films but I understand Ben has sharpened the video image and re-instated the original tinting for The Bride's Play.

I picked up Ben's DVDs of both THE BRIDE'S PLAY and BEAUTY'S WORTH and they both look even better than Ed's original versions, which were no slouches to start with. I would highly recommend that the rest of us Kickstarter backers do likewise. I'm giving the Kickstarter versions as gifts to friends who will appreciate them.

I was the guest on WFMU's "Morricone Island" film soundtrack show on Tuesday. In addition to talking about film scoring, upcoming DVD projects and more, you'll also hear a few segments of my score to WKWiF.

I watched The Bride's Play last night. Somewhere in NitrateVille, someone reviewed it by saying it was kind of lifeless until they reached the last 20 minutes, when the bride actually does her play. I concur with this assessment: the first 55 minutes or so is rote stuff set among beautiful locations, and it's only when they go to the flashback of the original bride's play that the film becomes entertaining.

But what a GORGEOUS print! Aside from the few seconds of decomp in the middle, this 35mm print looks like the best nitrate. It was a pleasure to watch the print, if not the plot.

Kickstarter money well-spent, once again!

I did the three at once click on Amazon 24 hours ago and look forward to receiving the package. I had a code for When but the $5 service charge on my order from Amazon leaves me little of the code but I am getting them which is the best part!!

Thanks for ordering the trifecta, if that's the right word. I hope you enjoy the films! …and do consider posting an Amazon review for each – there have been fewer press/online reviews than I'd anticipated so far, and every little bit helps.

Thanks You, Thank You Thank You.....Benn and Ed have all three and cannot believe the quality of the prints...looks like they were made yesterday......had different versions of them all, mostly from Europe, and they pale in comparison. Keep the Davies' films coming you have a very, very satisfied customer.....

You really have the Library of Congress to thank on the image quality. Their film lab staff scanned original 35mm nitrate or pres negatives made from nitrate that the LoC had preserved.

A couple more nice reviews have come in for WHEN KNIGHTHOOD:

Phil Hall on Cinema-Crazed
"This silent epic is a major surprise: a charming, entertaining adventure...If this work is any indication, Davies’ surviving films need to be seen again and her reputation requires a new consideration."
cinema-crazed.com

Michael Barrett on PopMatters
"We’re glad Model found such excellent Library of Congress prints of these Paramount releases, and we encourage more such efforts in the future."
popmatters.com

I believe there are more reviews on the way…

Glad you enjoyed WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER, Moviepas. Marcel Perez vol 2 will be another silent release sourced from LoC (and MoMA) 35mm material.

BTW, a great write-up on the film and on the Blu-Ray/DVD was posted last week on the Greenbriar Picture Shows site.

And…the film has just been booked for a Sept screening at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, with David Drazin accompanying. I'll post a link when their site is updated with series info.

Ben, I finally got around to watching "When Knighthood Was In Flower" yesterday. What a glorious experience!! I had the old VHS release from 25 years ago, and the thing never played right. I threw it away years ago, so I'd forgotten the gist of the film. This was so well done. I didn't realize that some of it was actually filmed at Windsor Castle! The visuals of the film are magnificent. This also made me look up some history, and it was fascinating to learn the genuine facts of the story, facts which in many respects equal the fictionalization of the movie. I'd forgotten that the real Charles Brandon was Henry VIII's best friend in real life, and that he really did marry Mary Tudor when the old king of France, her husband, died. Mary must have been a minx in real life, too. Anyway, a wonderful experience, Ben. Thank you!! One last thing: the score was spot-on! Your scores always seem to be. For me, that's an important facet in watching these. The other night I watched "The Picture of Dorian Gray" in the Thanhouser Collection, and again the score you did for that was superb.
