Thanks Mike, He rightfully deserves being honoured for all his hard work.

On a personal grateful opinion, shared by everybody here on Nitrateville. A simple Note... but, with a lot of Love and Admiration "Thank you Chris".

Really sad news. I always looked forward to his reviews of every single film shown at the various festivals, and always knew where to find him at Cinefest (in the front row). I'm glad I got to share some meals and conversation with him.

As anyone else who got to see "Steady Intermittent," his personal annual newsletter, will hopefully understand, reading it made me feel guilty -- because I never accomplished a fraction of what he did in a single year. Teaching, projecting, reviewing movies new and old, making his own movies, and attending several annual classic film festivals. He certainly made the most of what time he had here.

I've been away from the forums for a couple of days and just learning of Mr. Jacob's passing. This is a sad loss to the community. My heartfelt condolences to Chris Jacob's family, friends and everyone he's touched through his scholarly passion for silent film.

I'm late to the obituaries because it's Thanksgiving weekend up here, but I want to add my condolences.

His postings here came across, always, as Mike and others described his personality: gentle, even-tempered, deeply informative, and really helpful towards fostering a better understanding and appreciation of the movies.

I am shocked and deeply saddened to read this news. I knew Chris was having some health issues but, as others have also said, was under the impression he was doing better. I corresponded with him regularly over the past few years and he was always eager to talk about films and filmmaking with me, and was very generous with his knowledge.

A terrible shock, perhaps more so for those of us who were not aware that he was seriously ill and knew little more of him other than his work on Nitrateville. Sounds a really decent fellow as well as a very knowledgeable one.

I have known Chris for years from many film conventions, and, in person, he was every bit as he was in his articles and columns, intelligent, fair minded and extraordinarily well informed on both the history and technology of films. He was always there, as several have already said, seated in one of the front rows, seeing just about everything, and quite friendly, talking about his own films or the weather in North Dakota. We will miss him.

Going back through my emails from Chris, I found this from Jul 28, 2106:

Eventually I’ll author a proper DVD of THE WITNESS FOR THE DEFENSE with alternate music scores, possibly an audio commentary, and a supplementary photo gallery of the images you can access as DVD-ROM files on this disc. I’m not sure if I’ll add any more tinting, since it seems to play well dramatically by shifting from black and white to color tints when they move from England to India, and then back to black and white for the big trial scene through the end.

I hope colleagues at UND, assuming Chris was not a one-man department, consider completing this film project in his memory. I know he worked hard trying to save this film.

Thanks for sharing these, Harold. Chris was indeed a very tranquil guy. Years ago he was in LA as one of his films was being shown for some kind of indie prize, we planned to have lunch together at some classic Hollywood haunt. Unhappily it turned out to be the date of the LA Marathon. Because of street closures and the resulting traffic snarls, I finally arrived to pick him up two hours late. My hair was on fire, lightning was shooting out of my eyes, and I was bouncing around like a kangaroo, but he was absolutely unruffled. Nothing to do but calm down and go on with our plans, so we had a nice lunch at the Formosa Cafe, which he immediately recognized from countless films. So a good day.

Chris understood the importance of film presentation and that, ideally, movies belong up on the big screen. He was a devoted film festival attendee and we both would congregate before, during and after, with other pals, to anticipate, assess and appraise. Even though he had started his initial chemo treatments, he got to Syracuse in 2015, for his and Cinefest's last festival. Due to weather, he, and many others, were kept away the previous year, but he otherwise never missed it. We shared many a hearty meal in The Niagara Room and down at Santangelo's. He also loved Capitolfest and Cinecon and last got to both in 2014. That year he and I also made it to the annual TFS 2-day Eastman House visit (now also ended). It was a pleasure knowing him and my wife and I miss him.

One of the reasons why Chris took a special interest in The Witness for the Defense (1919) was because it was the first movie to play at the Empire Theatre in Grand Forks, now the Empire Arts Center. Here's his article on the theatre's history:

Chris was quite tickled to learn that one of my Kickstarter projects, Ducks and Drakes, and the Nell Shipman film Back to God's Country played in Grand Forks at the same time.

DUCKS AND DRAKES played at the New Grand (now Empire) theatre on Friday-Saturday, April 1 and 2 of 1921.... According to our local newspaper ads, a few blocks away around the corner BACK TO GOD’S COUNTRY was playing at the FotoPlay theatre those same nights. Since I have the old Milestone/Image DVD of that, I should do a double-feature!

Oh my goodness! I am so very saddened to hear this news!

It was always such a TREAT to read his "Old Films In HD" thread; and it was the thread that first attracted me to this site about five years ago now, (I still feel a relative "newbie"), but I soooooo looked forward to reading his reviews on that thread because they were, ARE, so informative, and interesting, and exciting, intelligent, detailed, and choc-full of the little details that a collector [like me] always wants to know, (such as is there a commentary track, what are the extra's, what is the picture quality like? etc.) and I would always, ALWAYS accept his opinion as gospel as to the number of stars he would reward a film!

Oh this is such a big loss to the site... Christopher, may you rest in peace... I so WISH I had at least said "Thank you" to you for all those reviews! I do regret that now; I must admit... David Alp.

This is foolish of me, but watching this thread drift down list of active threds, seeing Theda Bara back on the masthead, it all makes me feel like we've done mourning.

I've been tempted several times to add a review to Chris' thread. I would have used his reviews as a template for how to do it right, although I don't have the same skills (and viewing equipment) to do it justice.
