Need help to find out what happened to Mystery Actor

PostFri May 04, 2018 6:26 am

Have been searching for an unknown actor playing in such classics as He who gets slapped (1924), The Lost World(1925), The Freshman (1925), Our Hospitality(1923), Oliver Twist (1922) and The Shock(1923).

After Long search found his real Name, but nothing more
https://archive.org/stream/standardcastingd03unse#page/n293/mode/2up/search/George+Marion

His real Name was George Marion and is probably the same mentioned in 1923 LA Directory As Geo L. Marion
Photo(Player?) living at 4211 Glassell Av. with Eugene Marion. After that one and only entry nothing about him in other LA Directories.
Found a George L. Marion who passed away in 1936 (California). And a Eugene who died in 1933 also California.
I would be grateful for any help.

On the plus side, I now have Billy Bevan's, Chester Conklin's and Edward Everett Horton's phone numbers.

Next time you phone them, say hello for me.

While I don't know if it's the same person, there was an actor named George L. Marion who was accused of the 20 August 1909 murder of Frances Lee Brooks in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She had been living with Marion as his wife. Marion was convicted in January 1910 and sentenced to death, scheduled to be carried out on 28 September 1911. Variety raised a plea for commutation on the grounds that Marion wasn't in his right mind, and the commutation was granted 20 September. In July 1918 he was pardoned and "has gone west", the same journal reported. (Sources: Variety: 9 Sep 1911, page 5; 30 Sep 1911, page 12; 26 Jul 1918, page 5.)

Brooks' death certificate shows that she was about 30 and born in Canada. The correct date of death is 20 August 1909; Variety misreported it as 29 August and misreported it again in 1918. Interment was to be in Zion City, Illinois.

Finding information on this obscure George Marion, including confirmation or denial as to whether he was the same man involved in the Frances Lee Brooks case, is made difficult by the more frequent results found for George F. Marion Sr. (and Jr.), who played Garbo's father in Anna Christie.

Here is an article about the murderer George L. Marion, which asserts that his real name was George L. Sullivan:

The George Marion that you show on the two photos n the standard casting directory appear to be well over 60+ years old and doesn't resemble George F. Marion who was in films well beyond the mid 20's. Also, may not be the same as the person convicted in 1911 or so as the casting directory is from the mid -20's. He may just drifted into obscurity like alot of silent film character actors after the 20's.

Thats right I had a difficult search too because of the more known Anna Christie (1930) actor.
Thanks Harold, Rick and Hamilton I will search the Sullivan clue. The New York Clipper says something about San Francisco and I think I remember that a George Louis Marion was living according to 1920 Census in San Francisco.

Found this about the pardoned murderer at Google search : https://www.google.de/search?hl=de&biw=1440&bih=721&tbm=bks&ei=NQ_wWuSrBIqR6ASn45CYAw&q=George+L.+Marion.+Marion%2C+whose+real+name+is+stated+in+the+application+to+be+Sullivan%2C+is+now+more+than+sixty+years+old.+lie+was+an+actor+by+profession%2C+&oq=George+L.+Marion.+Marion%2C+whose+real+name+is+stated+in+the+application+to+be+Sullivan%2C+is+now+more+than+sixty+years+old.+lie+was+an+actor+by+profession%2C+&gs_l=psy-ab.3...75162.76121.0.76195.3.3.0.0.0.0.0.0..2.0....0...1c.1j2.64.psy-ab..1.0.0.0...51.tA1oIYndKqg
That he was more than sixty years old in 1918/19 make him a very good match.

Also found him in 1910 Census he was in Prison in Wilkes Barre, occupation given as actor, stage. He was born there in 1857/58 in South Carolina.

And also something of a breakthrough here from 1931 (this is definitely him).
The Brooklyn NY Standard Union 1931 says this : George L. Marion has been cast in Richard Arlens new Picture "Roped In".("Roped In" is (?)the working/former title of the film Caught filmed in 1931). Marion first went on the stage in 1884 with a Minstrel Show. Still active at Age of 73. Marion works regularly in all of Hollywoods Major Studios. he first played on a Los Angeles stage when the City had a Population of only 15000.

He was alive in 1931 at Age 73.

In 1930 Census I found Gus L. Marion living Los Angeles and occupation Actor in Movies. The birth date fits also. He was Born 1856/57 in South Carolina.

I guess to his credit they could still post his phone # in the standard casting directories to find work while he was incarcerated or was he out of the slammer for a short time enough to find work?

The court system must have been a little different back then or he had a good lawyer.

Maybe he knew Jack Luduen?
