The festival seems to be continuing in a much reduced format this year, which is a shame, although the Wesley Theatre will be an excellent venue for the restored
Phantom of the Opera.
One thing I admired very much about the San Francisco festival is that there was a definite evangelistic zeal behind the event. It didn't aim merely to show silents to people who are already knowledgeable and interested, but to educate, and to further promote the artform. I heard several people in the audience say that they had never seen a silent until attending a show on a whim one year, and haven't missed a festival since. This is an attitude that would definitely assist the survival of the Australian festival.
