The Farmer’s Wife (1928)
3.20pm, 23 Sep 2012
BFI Southbank, LondonRestoration premiere of a Hitchcock silent.
This time round, the tone's comic and it's a man - a morose widowed farmer - who's unsure about which of the local women he should select as his new wife. But again it's sexual passion (as well as male pride) that's the problem: how does the way people look relate to how they are? Often very funny, the film is directed with great subtlety; particularly in two virtuoso party scenes, Hitchcock's use of long takes and his meticulous choreography of a large group of actors work wonders.
Featuring: Lillian Hall-Davies, Jameson Thomas and Gordon Harker. With live accompaniment by Neil Brand.
