BFI Southbank, LondonRestoration premiere of a Hitchcock silent.
Father-daughter tensions arise when a millionaire (Harker), suspecting his playgirl daughter's fiancé is a gold-digger, pretends the family fortune is gone. A bubbly comic parable built around Balfour's effervescent energy, the film is an early example of Hitchcock's long-term fascination with the foibles of the filthy rich (who were to him, one suspects, forever strange).
Featuring: Betty Balfour, Gordon Harker, Ferdinand Von Alten and Jean Bradin. Live score by contemporary composer Mira Calix.
There is a further screening of the BFI restoration on Sunday 30 September which will featur a live piano accompaniment.
