"The Maltese Falcon" starring Humphrey Bogart in 35mm

PostFri Nov 03, 2017 5:51 pm

On the BIG Screen in 35mm. Friday, Nov. 10 at 8PM.

Starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Syndey Greenstreet. Directed by John Huston. (1941)

$8 Adults / $6 Seniors & Kids. Tickets available at the door.

Scheduling conflicts unfortunately allow time for just one classic film screening at the Loew's in November, so we wanted to make a really good pick.

You can't go wrong with Sam Spade, Dahiell Hammett, a fat man, and a little statue of a bird.

Humphrey Bogart had played gangsters and tough guys for the better part of a decade on Warner Bros. lot. But in his performance as Sam Spade -- the coolly sardonic private eye who understands the dark side of humanity in all its greedy perversity, and even feels its temptations himself, especially when they are embodied by a beautiful woman -- Humphrey Bogart began a swift transition to super star (a metamorphosis that was completed by his role in "Casablanca".) Bogart created the archetypal detective antihero that endures to this day in the movies and on TV.

Adapting Dashiell Hammett's novel -- and staying as close to the original story as the Production Code allowed -- first-time director John Huston turned "The Maltese Falcon" into a movie that is often considered to be the first film noir in its hardboiled attitude, collection of venal characters (colorfully played by Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Elisha Cook, Jr.), Mary Astor's femme fatale, and Bogart's morally relativistic Spade.

A critical as well as popular success, "The Maltese Falcon" was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay, and established Huston as a formidable director as well as screenwriter.

The Loew's is a place where the great movie going experience is still alive -- a classic movie palace, a 50 foot wide screen, and a real pipe organ for entrance music before most shows!
