Looking For Thelma Hill Silent Shorts

PostMon Jun 02, 2014 8:35 am

Hello everyone,

I'm a big fan of silent actress and bathing beauty Thelma Hill. She appeared in more than 100 movies - mostly Mack Sennett comedy shorts. I would really like to find more of her films especially any from her Toots and Casper series. I'm afraid many of these movies are now lost but if you have any please contact me.

My blog about Thelma Hill is http://www.thelmahill.net

and you can email me at [email protected]

Thanks a lot! Elizabeth :-)

There may a couple of these at LoC. Steve Massa and I just screened one there last week. I don't recall the title (Steve will, though), and this one is part of a 16mm collection that hasn't been catalogued yet...but will be.

Have you checked Paul Gierucki's Mack Sennett collection that comes out from Flicker Alley next month? The titles are listed here on their website.

I've got a 16mm print of one of the Toots & Caspers. "Smile Buttercup, Smile".

The Toots & Casper that Ben, Rob Stone and I looked at the other day was SPARERIBS REFORMS ('29). The other T&C's that I've seen which float around with collectors are WHAT A WIFE ('28), FOOLING CASPER ('28), CASPER'S WEEKEND ('28), and THE FAMILY MEAL TICKET ('28). Sadly don't know of any that are available on DVD or video.

I'm a big fan of Thelma's as well, and I really like your Thelma site. In the Mack Sennett Pin-Ups section in the 8th photo where the girls are pulling off the man's jacket - the comic is Harry Sweet. It's probably an early 1920s Century or Fox comedy as Sweet headlined for both.

Thank you so much for all the information about Thelma's films! I'm glad to know that many of her Toots and Casper are still around even though they aren't available on DVD.

I also have a blog about Thelma at http://www.thelmahill.net

Watched a roughish copy of that via YT. It ran for about 12m, and I was wondering if it was complete - info on IMDb suggests 'no'. And who played the judge - not listed on IMDb - reminded me a bit of Arthur Housman.

CLUNKED ON THE CORNER (1929) is on YT. Thelma has a very brief 'blink and you'll miss her' bit a a shop assistant.

My print is a full 800ft. Probably in the range of 20 minutes.

I have a VHS copy of CASPER'S WEEKEND. Had it since early 90's, can't recall exactly how it was acquired.
