PostThu Oct 27, 2011 9:03 am

Donald Sosin, who has performed scores for a number of silents on DVD including the recent von Sternberg set from Criterion, has written an opera. Here's some info about a planned production and the Kickstarter campaign he has going to raise money for it:

NEW PRODUCTION OF DONALD SOSIN'S ESTHER, AN OPERA FOR FAMILY AUDIENCES

In honor of next year's 100th anniversary of the founding of the Jewish women's charity organization Hadassah, Donald Sosin announces a new production of his children's opera ESTHER, to be staged and released on DVD in 2012. The 50-minute work was premiered on Long Island and performed around the New York metropolitan area in the late 1970's, and heard on WQXR. Funds for the new production are being raised through a Kickstarter campaign, with over $3,600 out of a needed $12,000 already pledged. The deadline is Oct. 28. For more information visit

Donald will lead a 6-piece band at MoMA on Sun. Oct. 30 at 2:30 for a program of rarely shown short European silent film comedies, and return for NAIL IN THE BOOT on Nov. 3 at 6:15.

He and his wife, singer Joanna Seaton, will host a series of silent film comedies at the Norfolk CT Library on Nov. 4, 25 and Dec. 2.
