Adolph Deutsch and "The Apartment"

PostFri Oct 07, 2016 12:58 am

One of the great Oscar mysteries for me is why Adolph Deutsch won Best Score, for The Apartment, when the gorgeous main title theme (called "The Rickshaw Boy" in the film) was actually written in 1949 for a forgotten British "B" film called "Jealous Love", by well-known British composer Charles Williams (he also wrote "The Dream of Olwen").

More interesting still, Mr Williams does not even receive screen credit.

Does anyone know the back story on this? I would love to know how William' theme was chosen, and by whom?

As Williams was alive in 1960 (he died in 1978) , he must surely have been paid and received royalties.

None of the Billy Wider biographies mention it either.

Film Score Monthly has this article:

As this and other references mention that the publisher of Williams' song, Mills Music, gave permission for the title change, I presume royalties were paid for its use.

Paul - thanks so much for that link, much appreciated.

However, this excellent article doesn't explain how "Jealous Lover" came to be chosen for "The Apartmment", so I am wondering if Billy Wilder remembered seeing "The Romantic Age", liked the theme and subsequently chose it for his movie?

I guess we'll never know.

Oh thanks Paul!

That looks like a very interesting book that I must buy.

Once again, the value of this wonderful forum has been amply demonstrated by your helpful replies.

Thank you so much!
