RICHARD WAGNER Germany 1913 Biopic

PostSat Dec 31, 2016 10:24 pm

While researching the subject of opera in silent films, I chanced upon an 80 minute biopic, RICHARD WAGNER, made in Germany in 1913 for the centennial of Wagner's birth. It was surprising good quality in terms of visual sharpness and film making too. It lacks music so I added Alfred Hertz's 1913 recording of the Parsifal orchestral suite, Karl Muck's 1927 recording of the Parsifal Act 1 Prelude, and Stokowski's synthesis of themes from Tristan and Isolde recorded in 1932. All the music matched the film surprisingly well.

The original 1913 score by Guiseppe Becce survives and was restored and newly orchestrated for the centennial of the film. It can heard here (although the film is in the wrong aspect ratio):

Since the 1913 filmmakers weren't allowed to use Wagner's original music composer Becce had to write "Wagner-avoiding-music" which is quite fun to listen to. And he also played the lead in the film (his resemblance of Wagner is quite uncanny)!!!
The restored film with the original music is also available on DVD: https://www.amazon.de/Richard-Wagner-De ... agner+1913" target="_blank

Good to know that this film has an official release. It is available from the American Amazon although it ships from Germany.
