I came upon this youtube channel

collector Sam Dodge.

Sam Dodge has great stories to tell
about the cameras.

Great stuff there! Sure wish I could afford one of those cameras (and the film, processing, and printing to use it)!

The fact that most of the silent era cameras were built like tanks
and could survive harsh weather conditions gave an openess and
remote look to silent films.

Sound films tried to continue this tradition early on with movies
like Hallelujah, The Big Trail, and Trader Horn, but the studios
needed more controlled environments for sound shooting thus
driving filmmaking indoors.

This guy should really be making these films without a shirt on.

One of the best channels on YouTube, IMHO.

His videos are some of the very few that I've watched multiple times. :!:
