Silent Stars on THE ROYAL HAWAIIAN HOTEL

PostSun May 07, 2017 12:09 pm

Curious to hear Jobyna Ralston speak? She left the screen in 1930, but she made a rare appearance on The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a 15-minute program of music and chatter syndicated by Transco in 1934.

For some reason, this program was a magnet for faded (or fading) film stars. I know of only nine episodes that survive, of which eight can easily be found online. The stars appearing in them include:

#3: Sue Carol, Betty Compson
#7: Dorothy Mackaill
#8: Bebe Daniels, Ben Lyon
#9: Richard Arlen, Jobyna Ralston
#10: Ruth Roland
#12: Fifi D'Orsay
#13: Gloria Stuart

The chatter is scripted, but it makes for fun listening, and there's plenty of good Hawaiian music. You can listen to them, free, through this link (click on Royal Hawaiian Hotel): http://otrrlibrary.org/r.html

Awesome, thanks for the link! Dorothy Mackaill took up permanent residence at the hotel. I reported here a few years back on a conversation i had with a staff member who remembered her--quite the character!
