See inside Greta Garbo's Manhattan apartment...

PostMon Mar 27, 2017 6:54 pm

...because it's for sale for $6 million. Her decor is said to largely be intact, and this site has pics:

http://ny.curbed.com/2017/3/22/15028418 ... -campanile" target="_blank

One caveat:

True to the building’s ultra-exclusive nature, buyers who are interested in the place must be willing to pay cash—no financing deals are allowed at the Campanile.

It's not in the article, though someone's noted it in the comments, that Garbo herself designed some of the carpets and did the interior design. It's not to my taste, I must admit.

The timing of her niece's passing explains why her estate was auctioned in 2012 and 2014. I had always wondered why it took twenty years to be dispersed.

Some photos here - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/gallery/greta-garbo-estate-auction-reveals-398966/1-pink-passion.

It's all quite modern ain't it? Very 1950's - although purple and pink are not me. I would have made an offer but hey, I wouldn't want to live in a place that thinks it is "Ultra-exclusive".

Looking at the blueprint of the apartment it seems odd that the living room is on one end of the apartment
and the dining room and kitchen are on the opposite end. The bedrooms are in between. One would think that the living, dining rooms and kitchen would all be together on one side and the bedrooms on the opposite side.

This has nothing to do with the apartment but I was wondering if Garbo left any of her estate to charity. From what
I remember I thought she left everything to a niece and a nephew. I read that she was very cheap when it came to charity so
I was curious if she left any charity in her will. Probably not.

I wonder if Garbo, had she started to get old today, would be like actual celebrities and so she would be addicted to plastic surgery and botox instead of cover her face with a veil.

Garbo also suffered from depression. Would her life be different with modern medications of today?
Keep thinking...

I would assume the reason the living room and dining room are on opposite ends of the apartment are so the bedrooms can have some privacy and the public rooms can have lots of windows to see the spectacular view.

Great apartment, but what's with all the pink?

Brooksie, thanks for the link! I'm very excited to say I have a handbag just like that black one; now I can say I have a Garbo bag. haha (Mine is Christian Siriano for Payless.)

Man, I would kill for such an apartment overlooking the East River, Garbo's or not.

So, who has been living there since 1990?

And now Cecil B. DeMille's place is on the market: http://la.curbed.com/2017/3/29/15099634/cecil-b-demille-estate-laughlin-park-los-feliz.

The good news: You don't have to pay cash. The bad news: You'll still have to pay $25 million for it.

That living room rug looks like a Pucci dress LOL

I think even if I did have that sort of cash in the bank I'd pass on it.

The only thing I know about this shack is that W.C. Fields rented a house next door and used to take pot shots at the swans frolicking around in DeMille's fountain. (I'll have a word to my bank manager and see if he can give me a few bob).

Obviously there would have to be a bathroom schedule.

It was in another article that she left the apartment to a niece, who was her closest living direct relative. She and her family lived there from 1992-2013.

I said in an earlier post that the niece died - in fact, she moved away; either way, it explains why Garbo's estate was sold at that time. They don't plan to sell the furnishings with the house which, while a shame, is understandable.

One of my students from the mid-90's had a sister who lived in NYC then and who dated Garbo's great-nephew while he was living at the apartment. She complimented the rugs, and he told her that Garbo had designed them. Since she had never seen a Garbo film, they rented a videotape of one, and both fell asleep midway through!

Derek is a successful venture capitalist?

Ten years ago, or more, I sold him a photograph of Garbo on Ebay, and at the time he was selling old outdoor Christmas decorations and his old tiny Hot Wheels cars and tracks. I suspected he wanted my Garbo photo to copyright it.

A glance at gretagarbo.com declares that it alone has the rights to the name, image, likeness, signature, and voice of Garbo.

PS: Garbo died 27 years ago. There have been several estate auctions in the intervening years. Various Reisfields have lived there. The current appearance of the apartment may owe as much to the taste of the heirs, as it does to its late owner.
