Looking forward to this one. I do hope The Last Warning (1928) gets a similar release. The restoration's already been done, and it looks just as visually spectacular.

It looks wonderful. Can't wait to get a copy. Aren't we so lucky these days with so many films being done up!

Picture looks great. Will have to hear the actual disc to judge the sound. But an amazing release nevertheless.

Anyone know if this will be from the print previously issued by Kino or the negative that was preserved in an archive years ago?

A great film. I hope to get this as soon as released.

Edit:
From what I've read on other forums, Curtis Harrington used material from the Library of Congress which holds a negative and lavender positive.

That's most impressive, considering that Mr. Harrington has been dead for over 10 years ....

That says it's coming from Sony, not Cohen... which could well mean the Columbia remake from 1962, not the Whale.

It says James Whale is the director and the description says it's the 4K Cohen restoration.

Yes, it does, but we don't know how the listing got that information or how accurate it is, if the releasing label is not Cohen.

Deep Discount's listing says Momentum, which does seem to be related to Cohen in some way.

The trailer's back, courtesy of Fandango:

I'm happy to report that Gloria Stuart's audio commentary from the Kino DVD will be retained as an extra on the Cohen disc! There's also a commentary from James Whale biographer James Curtis.

Classicflix is offering a special pre-order price of $15.98 for both DVD and Blu-ray through September 8 (Friday).

The picture quality is astonishing but I am not pleased by the added music track, which I suppose is to help sales. I sincerely hope it is not added to the actual film!

For me, this is not only the best Blu-ray release of the year, but maybe even of the century. Only something like LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT could top it.

Pray tell - why is it as important to you as that? It has looked like crap for decades, but it still has been more than watchable up until now. :)

The Whale horror films are my favorite movies, and I don't feel like I've really seen THE OLD DARK HOUSE. Sure, we've been able to enjoy the narrative and the fine acting, but we've never had a clear view of the Femms house. We've never really seen the gorgeous cinematography and lighting. Add to that this was practically a lost film for so many years, to finally be able to see it in all of its cinematic glory is a triumph. Maybe now the movie will get the recognition it deserves.

Just now I could see the trailler. Incredible. It's not from a simple 1930's print. It looks virtually as it had restored from a camera negative. I found it was restored from a quality fine grain made in the 40's from camera negative.

http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/o ... on.608900/

Looks a bit better than the restoration of Dracula (1931).

Dracula 1931 was restored from a "fine grain" shot from camera negative in the early or middle 30's, but in that time it was called lavanda master, and it was not really a fine grain master. A restorer explained that before 40's (when real fine grain duplicate stock was introduced) the lavanda master was similar to a good print stock, finner but not much, but was able to handle better the contrast/dynamic range, preserving better the tones in shadows and highlights.
In the 40's with the introduction of real fine grain master the quality of duplication get quite better. We can see this in the very well made optical soft transitions of Citizen Kane (which require two film generations for duplication).

This 4K restoration clip of The Old Dark House, despite some heavy digital compression artefacts, for many scenes looks almost like a film shot yesterday. I upose the film was considered lost until a print was found in the 60's, but appers that Library of Congress had these fine grain master all the time but was not located until some years ago.

Drop your electronic devices, and run!

To the Quad Cinema, 34 W. 13th St., New York City, where this 4K restoration opens today. Apparently, for only a 4 day engagement. What a thrill it will be to see this on the silver screen.
