If you ask me (of course nobody has!), society just moves in circles. If you repress everyone so much - say from Victorian times up to the 1960's - then no doubt all this is going to usher in a less restrictive era. Probably the excesses of the Roman era were followed by severe restrictions. If we all live long enough, we'll once again go into an era where the relative freedoms we now enjoy will be banned once again.

If Mr Weinstein was around in the 30’s or any other time in history his behaviour would have been the same but with less chance of being caught. His money and power would have ensured that. His victims would also have been less likely to come forward as the shame heaped on by the judgemental would have been unbearable.

The improvement in this era is that sexual predators are now being called out for what they are and get rightfully kicked to the streets. There will still always be those idiots who shame the victims as liars and "attention seekers", but eventually the truth will out. This is also going on in animation at the moment...

And director James Tobak is the latest sexual predator to be outed. Some of the stories in this article are really, really bad.

Funny you mention Mayer...

Pretty laughable. And sad, really.

L B Mayer "Arse Grabbia Artis" ©

PostSun Oct 29, 2017 12:03 pm

Funny is right.
In support of her great Uncle:
1. She offers some quotes from predator David O Selznick's son,
whose LBM defense includes (see below) a Judy Garland anecdote-- which is actually quite damning
and
Image
2. She apparently forgot to include the Frank Sinatra anecdote (as seen below in a re-telling from a James Kaplan bio).

It must be awkward bearing a name-droppable surname that is met often with derision.

Correction: I’ve changed “grandson” to “son.”

It's just so strange, playing up the fact that you're descended from one of the biggest pricks who ever lived.

I appreciate correcting the tabloids' screwing up of "where people were and when", like the dumb CLEOPATRA statement, but your article runs counter to most Hollywood history. Maybe he wasn't jerking off onto a girl's leg under a boardroom table so putting him in the modern company of Weinstein rankles you, but the damning stories are there (and it shows how lazy these writers really are that they couldn't check if the story took place while Mayer was actually alive). The Garland stuff is well-established and creepy. So, are all of the people who called Mayer a pervert and his studio a safe haven for perverts liars? That sounds awfully like the rationale some are using to shut up Weinstein's victims (to no avail, thankfully).

Kevin Spacey is the latest outed predator, although he's now used the drama to come out, period.

Blind hagiography is no balance to well-attested faults.

As Janis Paige proves well in that linked memory, time does not erase uncomfortable facts. (I suppose that L.B. was the only man on the lot unaware that his "Christmas Parties" were legendary bacchanals?)

Sunlight and fresh air are still the best disinfectants.

Man. I thought the few pervs on my wishlist might not have high enough a profile to get outed for their deviancy, but considering the shit that's getting dredged up, my wish may be granted.

I suppose that no one would be surprised that the issue is now oozing out of the halls of Congress.

I find all of this credible. Yet I wonder at what stage it becomes a witch hunt.

An individual witch hunt can happen at any time - that only depends on having a witch hunter.

But this is very real, has a long way to go, and I welcome it.

So far, it's no one very surprising. A friend of mine was at one time a waitress at a popular brunch place in Chicago called The Bongo Room, and she says Piven was the only person ever banned from the restaurant for relentless nastiness to the staff.

In some ways the society at large should share in the responsibility, for it is a small to middling cross-section who elevate some of these show business people to 'major celebrity' status. When these people arrive at this level, quite a few of them think they can behave as they will, beholden to no-one. How some of them carry on is often quite amazing. Perhaps if those who become besotted could learn to treat all show people as normal people who go to work like the rest of the population, we may see a return to some sense of normality? It's a hard ask I know.

There's some truth there -

- and yet, the problem isn't just among Celebs.

It's as common, if not moreso, among the powerful in every business.
