In an attempt to move this discussion away from Vegemite and back onto KING OF JAZZ....here is the answer I received from Jon Mulvaney at Criterion about this release, vis a vis a UK release and its compatibility.....

Hello Brendan,

Thanks for writing. The KING OF JAZZ release will be released as a Region 1 DVD and Region A Blu-ray only. I'm sorry I cannot deliver better news!

We don't have international rights to the majority of our titles, so we can only sell directly to customers in the United States and Canada. Because of this, our Blu-rays must be encoded Region A and DVDs, Region 1, and we are limited to present the film in its original language with optional English subtitles only. Once another vendor (such as Amazon, DVD Planet, Barnes & Noble, eBay, etc) acquires our product we have no control over where they choose to send it, but Criterion cannot directly sell our Region 1/A discs outside of North America.

That said, we are excited to say that Region B Blu-ray discs from the Criterion Collection are now available in the UK! We launched in April 2016, and these Blu-rays are available for purchase through Amazon UK, HMV, Fopp, and other retailers throughout the UK. We will not be releasing Region 2 DVDs, and these Region B Blu-rays will be presented in the film’s original language with optional English subtitles only.

To the best of my knowledge there are no immediate plans to release KING OF JAZZ on Region B Blu-ray. Each UK release has to have a specific license and we're working to get as many released as we can. The best way to see what's available and to see the new announcements every month is to stay tuned to the Amazon UK page (https://www.amazon.co.uk/b?ie=UTF8&node=9781575031) and the ZOOM page (https://www.zoom.co.uk/category/criteri ... ction_film). We also announce the newest UK titles on the Criterion Collection Current every month on our website (https://www.criterion.com/current/posts). You can search for UK in the search bar on the upper right or you can click on “Announcements” under where it says “Categories” on the right.

If you'd ever like to order our Region 1/A discs from criterion.com we do accept international payment, and you can then select to ship to an American/Canadian address. If you choose to pursue this option, in the first portion of check-out, you'll be able to enter your American shipping address. In the second ('Payment') portion of check out, you'll be able to enter your billing information. For your billing address, please select "Outside the U.S. and Canada" at the bottom of the State/Province/Region drop-down. As long as your card is entered with a valid card number, expiration date, name and postal code, your payment information should be saved successfully. If you have trouble with this you can email [email protected] for assistance.

I hope this is helpful!

All the best,
Jon Mulvaney

Just one more reason why everyone should have a multi-region player. Seriously.

That pretty much guarantees that Universal is eyeing a different distributor for the European market.

This is precisely the reason I have a multi-regional Blu-ray player -- and also a multi regional DVD player. I would NEVER buy any other kind of player. Its too much of a hassle.
