Upcoming releases from various labels

PostThu Feb 15, 2018 7:00 pm

There have been quite a few announcements lately for sound-era films on DVD and Blu-Ray that may interest members of this group, but I haven't always been sure whether to make individual posts on them. Perhaps I'll try an overall thread covering titles that haven't been discussed elsewhere. The Kinos and Criterions will be issued in both formats unless otherwise noted.

Kino:
A Bill of Divorcement (1932) just announced, no date yet
Topaze (1933) 6 March
Stingaree (1934) 20 March
The Outlaw (1943) 27 February
Joan of Arc (1948) 27 February
No Orchids for Miss Blandish (1948) 20 March
Singing Guns (1950) 17 April
Trigger Jr. (1950) 17 April
Ruby Gentry (1952) 17 April
The Wild Heart (1952 American edit of Gone to Earth) 12 June

Criterion:
Ingrid Bergman's Swedish Years (six films, 1935-40) 10 April [Eclipse series, so DVD only]
The Awful Truth (1937) 17 April
Moonrise (1948) 8 May

Arrow:
L'Atlantide (1932) 24 April
Sacha Guitry 1936-1938: 27 March (delayed from January)

Universal:
Cleopatra (1934) 10 April
For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) 27 March
The Egg and I (1947) 27 March

Twilight Time:
Don't Bother to Knock (1952) 20 March

I've stuck to the pre-widescreen films; anyone else is more than welcome to include announcements from later years.

A good idea to post these as a group, Harold.

I hadn't seen today's Criterion announcement yet, and I'm delighted to see that MOONRISE is coming up. It's a gorgeous film, with photography and lighting worthy of Borgaze's best silents, and it seems almost unknown. Definitely due for rediscovery.

The Egg and I (1947) 27 March

I have an idea this title in was listed for blu ray release some years ago and then cancelled. Similarly, Remember the Night(1940) was on blu ray thru TCM briefly and then withdrawn along with another title(which was later issued by Criterion). I missed both as a result and then got the Criterion of the other. I hate cancellations.

Thanks for posting these titles.

I wonder what Olive Films is planning? Haven't heard much from them lately.

They've continued to release new titles, although with a little more emphasis on later films and/or those from other countries:

The Wild Heart/Gone to Earth at last! Although I think my Korean DVD is probably the UK cut, so I may have to have both. Maybe they'll be able to include both cuts on one disc, but it doesn't sound like that's happening. Could Oh... Rosalinda!!! be far behind?

Also, whoda thunk the glories of No Orchids for Miss Blandish woulda made it to HD?

I'm happy to hear I've got another chance to get STINGAREE. I missed it on its last release. And nobody can get enough of Irene Dunne (at least I can't)!

Kino has just announced a new release of Becky Sharp (1935) to come "from a 4K scan of the 35mm nitrate negative & positive separations." No date is set yet.
