Show and Tell: Setting the Record Straight

PostSun Nov 08, 2015 3:34 pm

It ain't "Jo-BYE-na." Miss Ralston explains how her name is pronounced.

"ZaSu" was taken from the names of her two aunts, so as not to show favoritism. ZaSu herself preferred the spelling with a capital S, but this was not always followed through by others, then or now.

A common mistake, identifying Edgar and Tom as brothers (even the thorough Halliwell's Companion did this).

(Blown up from a very small image — if anyone has this in better quality, feel free to add it.)

Finally, Deanna Durbin gives another pronunciation lesson, this time for the benefit of her director, Robert SEE-Odd-Mack. (Thanks to Charles for this.)

To add to the confusion, Harold Lloyd would refer to "Jobee" when speaking of her familiarly, but say "Jo-by-na" when saying her whole name.
