NitrateVille Radio Episode 5: J.B. Kaufman, author of Pinocchio: The Making of the Disney Epic

I'm pleased to welcome J.B. Kaufman, who is not only an utterly knowledgable Disney expert and author, but also an old pal from way back, as you'll hear in the podcast. We mainly talk about his 2015 book about Disney's second and to many greatest feature, Pinocchio: The Making of the Disney Epic.

But we also talk about the Silly Symphonies, which he also co-wrote a book on, and even a little about a non-Disney subject, the silent star Blanche Sweet, who J.B. knew and plans to write about. So put on your Mickey Mouse ears and strap in for some serious Disneyfying in this episode, which runs 58 minutes.

Here's the Amazon link for the Pinocchio book. Here's J.B.'s page at Amazon. You'll find links to his other works here as well, like this one that we talk about:

Here's his blog.

This edition of Pinocchio has J.B. doing commentary (with Leonard Maltin and Eric Goldberg), as well as appearing on some of the supplemental materials.

Finally, we talk a little about the silent star Blanche Sweet. Here's a clip of her in the 1923 Anna Christie:

“I'm in favor of plagiarism. If we are to create a new Renaissance, the government should encourage plagiarism. When convinced that someone is a true plagiarist, we should immediately award them the Legion of Honor.” —Jean Renoir
