Ep. 13: Jerry Beck on Porky Pig/Capt. Marvel • Daniel Raim

PostThu Oct 12, 2017 11:01 pm

NitrateVille Radio Episode 13: Jerry Beck on Porky Pig 101 and Captain Marvel • "Harold and Lillian: A Hollywood Love Story" With Daniel Raim

It's the Pencil and Paper episode—it's all about how drawings turn into movies.

First, legendary animation scholar and studio executive Jerry Beck joins NitrateVille Radio to talk about Warner Archive's new collection Porky Pig: 101 Classic Warner Bros. Animated Shorts, better known as Porky Pig 101, containing 101 vintage cartoons, 99 of them in black and white, which show how Warner Bros.' evolved from a Disney-imitating also-ran to perhaps the most beloved and funniest of cartoon studios.

(2:13) In the first part, we talk about how Porky Pig helped directors like Tex Avery and Frank Tashlin develop the classic Termite Terrace humor sensibility.

(21:05) In the second part, we talk about the realities of putting classic cartoons out when studios are convinced that streaming has replaced collecting, and why we're still waiting for a Tex Avery collection.

(31:46) In the third part, we talk about other things happening in the world of cartoons on home video, from an upcoming Depatie-Freleng set to the work done by Steve Stanchfield (Thunderbean) and Tommy Jose Stathes (Cartoons on Film).

Here's Porky Pig 101 at WBShop.com and Amazon.
Here's Jerry's site Cartoon Research.
Steve Stanchfield/Thunderbean releases we talked about include Gulliver's Travels and Private Snafu, though there doesn't seem to be an active link for the latter at the moment.
Here's Tommy Jose Stathes' Cartoons on Film. Though he hasn't been on NitrateVille Radio, I did interview Tommy once here.

(41:10) But Jerry Beck doesn't just love classic cartoons—he also loves superhero movies, like the serial adaptation of comic book hero Captain Marvel. He provides the commentary on Kino Lorber's newly restored blu-ray and DVD The Adventures of Captain Marvel, follow up to the Daredevils of the Red Circle release we talked about here.

Here's The Adventures of Captain Marvel at Amazon.

(46:15) Harold Michelson was a storyboard artist and an Oscar-nominated production designer who created iconic images for films from The Ten Commandments to The Graduate to Spaceballs. His wife Lillian ran Hollywood's most dogged research library and was a kind of den mother for Hollywood in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Daniel Raim's film Harold and Lillian: A Hollywood Love Story is a lovely, charming documentary about their 60+ years as a couple, and toiling behind the scenes (and behind the greats, from DeMille and Hitchcock to Mel Brooks). I talk with Raim about it.

Harold and Lillian is available to rent on Amazon and on blu-ray and DVD from Kino Lorber; the latter includes extras showing more of Harold's work as it was turned into movies. and additional interview portions about their life together.

Porky Pig 101 arrived today. Fantastic set!

After watching the first few toons on the first disc, I have to say they look great. I can't imagine how original negative restorations would look that much better.

Please keep them coming!!

A couple of the first few were restorations off the negs, from the Golden Collection days... So are about 30 others throughout the set...
