What recent silent film related items have you purchased?

PostMon Jun 03, 2013 10:21 am

Hello all,

I thought it would be fun to see what silent-related purchases everyone is making. Since I am very new to the magic of silent cinema, most of my purchases will be DVDs and BDs of bigger titles.

Please take a moment to share your scores, be they movie posters, books, films, etc.

Since The Gold Rush (1925/1942) BD dropped to $20 on Amazon, I finally pulled the trigger on one of my favorites.
I also preordered Safety Last (1923), and look forward to watching that for the first time.

Okay, your turn. Don't be shy!

I recently found and bought these greeting cards with a wonderful publicity still from Sherlock, Jr. which I had never seen before:

The Sheik/The Son of the Sheik -- Special Edition. I love Eric Beheim's musical sound score for The Sheik. Sometimes I play it while I'm working around the house.

Holy cats! I was afraid I would come back to this thread and end up talking to myself. I am glad you proved me wrong. Many thanks to those that have contributed to the discussion.

As for me, my BD copies of The Gold Rush and The Thief of Bagdad recently arrived. I purchased the latter based on your recommendations, and hope to watch it Wednesday night.

A 1922 La Bara rouge compact from a company in her hometown. Not a very sentimental bunch, in that as she disappeared from silent screens, they continued to use her image but changed the name.

Lonesome Paul fejos, For some reason I just can not stop watching this film... I love the elaborate tinting toward the end of the film.

Mernau's Restored deluxe edition of Faust.

I'm a bit poor right now, so I can't buy as much as I'd like to.

I hear you. Just got the Milestone's Mary Pickford Collection. At $13 and change it was too good to pass up.

Carl Lemlies production,, and the rather unfortunately named director Paul Fejos (which I think literally translates from Spanish to 'The Ugly Ones' of Lonesome. I don't think this is a very 'great' film but for some reason I want to watch it over and over, and I have.. I just love it for some reason. This is one of those hybrid films made right in the middle to the transition to sound. It has synchronized sound effects and a musical score, and I think 2 brief sequences of scenes where the actors are actually talking to each-other. It is one of a few films like this made during the transition, a time I am very interested in.

Outstanding...but here's one I like better:

Undated, but content indicates 1929. Photo probably added by fan. No doubt about signature. Reads to me like personal response, not a form letter. "Ex-Mistress" must have been made (or rather "picturized") as My Past--one of her best.

Promo still of Norma Talmadge in "The Dove". The actual 8x10 is a lot better than this pic of it, which I took with my ipad. I'll have to get this scanner I inherited plugged in & working so I can scan all of my promo stills.

She looks PLENTY good in this pic; if she were hitchhiking, I'd burn up my brakes stopping to pick her up.

While this CKY image was also sold as a postcard, this is a theater advertising card. Presumably it was handed out at the theater or on the street. I have several of these.
