CHARLIE CHAPLIN'S OWN STORY-Bobbs Merrill 1916: A CENSUS

PostTue May 24, 2016 1:19 pm

If anyone has a jacketed first printing of CHARLIE CHAPLIN'S OWN STORY- (Bobbs-Merrill; 1916),
I'd like to buy it...... But I digress.

The Chaplin book, Rose Wilder Lane's "as told to" biography of Charlie,
was withdrawn and destroyed at Chaplin's behest, with only an alleged handful of
copies having survived.
The question has always been.... how many copies wound up safely in the hands
of reviewers, librarians, collectors, or unknowing booksellers ?
I've always felt the total was much higher than has been previously speculated.

To give two examples of editions unsuccessfully-pulped and/or previously-thought extinct:

The Allen bio by Lee Guthrie (Sean Young's ma) withdrawn after a lawsuit by Allen, but not soon enough
The "Cousins" book (co-ghosted by Graham Greene) was wrongly thought to have been totally suppressed in the UK.

ImageFollowing the path of Betty Alder, who published a pamphlet that attempted to track down the owners/location of every copy of H L Mencken's Ventures into Verse...

This thread is dedicated to listing the past and present location of every surviving copy of the first printing of
CHARLIE CHAPLIN'S OWN STORY-Bobbs Merrill 1916.
If you know of the location of any copy, or if you own a copy, please post the information on this thread.
