Silent film star not credited in Superman tv episode

PostMon Mar 27, 2017 6:21 pm

From the 1952 episode "The Mind Machine", three thugs kidnap a professor who has invented a machine for mind control, they are Dan Seymour(as boss Lou Cranek), Ben Welden(as Curley) and Fred Orth(as Al): Only thing is, it is not Fred Orth as Al,--- can you see who it is, well-known silent star and he performs the role appropriately without a word - in silence?? (see video clips below)

IMDb cast for episode

Sepia, this Supes fan is confused...

Imdb credits FRANK Orth, not Fred?

And if the birthdate there is correct, Frank's age was 72 in 1952; he looks too limber for that age in the last clip.

Hi wich2: the Fred Orth was my mistake, it should have been Frank Orth. I was running out of time and on the rush and didn't go back once more over the cast when I linked. But Frank or Fred, the actor in the scene is not him. It's a major silent star. :)

ok, here's 1 hint, ..he was 65 years old when he did this episode. He was old enough to be the father of Dan Seymour who plays the boss thug.

Yes, I think you won the prize, Donald. The date of when he would be 65 matches the show's date He seems to be in character as an actor, like he's putting on a face.

Donald, did you just take a wild guess, or was it the age 65, or did you just recognize him?

I've seen this episode numerous times over the years going back to when I was a kid so obviously I didn't have the silent film exposure of its performers or the knowledge at the time.

I was thinking this could've been a good brain teazer for LOC workshop in the summer at Culpepper.

I was interested in the comments the Youtube guy wrote so I randomly started watching his clips, that's how I recognized Monte. To be sure though I went to the cast list at the IMDb. I should've went somewhere else to see if Frank Orth's name was backed up in another source which would only demonstrate why Monte is playing the role. A last minute cast change or something. Happens all the time.

Thanks everyone, it was fun.

Not being contrary, just checking -

- to me, the jaw and hairline are not quite the same?

Do we have any confirmation other than images?

This is not the first time Monte was uncredited for a role. He was obviously visiting the set or appears in the Wallace Reid feature Always Audacious but that film is now lost. A still of the scene appears in Dave Menefee's book on Wallace Reid showing Blue in the scene.

That second picture down is taken just down from the Indianapolis Soldiers and Sailors monument on Monument Circle. Monte had just been back in Indy in 1961 just before he died. That might have been taken around that time - or it could possibly be a tad earlier. He and his brother were raised in a home in Knightstown, Indiana to which he donated both money and time visiting [periodically] over his lifetime. A friend who works for the Indiana Archives gave me a lot of photostatic copies of info of he and his brother's time at the institution. I didn't see the TV show about which you're talking, but just four years before he'd played the sheriff in "Key Largo" with Bogart/Bacall/Robinson/Barrymore/Trevor/etc. He should have looked similar.

Not sold yet.

From an L.A. filmbiz guy I know, who grew up with the show, and who loves it enough to have spoken with several of its principals, and to have been to Reeves' former home:

"Monte Blue was 6' 2".

This guy is maybe an inch taller than Ben Weldon, who was 5' 4". Dan Seymour was just about the same height as Bogart, who was 5' 8" - and Seymour is taller than this man.

I'm fairy sure this fellow actually is in another episode and has a couple lines, with a high pitched voice that belies his thuggish look.

Monte Blue? It would not be the first time someone was miscredited in that show - or any show."

Usually I am the world's worst at trying to guess "who they are". My answers are invariably "Watzisname" or "Thingamejig", however in this case I saw the face in the film and the features were instantly recognisable and what's more surprising, my brain was in top gear and I was able to get a name straight away.
