Silents featuring school kids, classroom, etc

PostMon Apr 10, 2017 12:26 pm

I create short silent movies using clips from public domain silents. Often times I need clips that feature school kids and classrooms, teachers etc. My search for silent movies with that content comes up empty. Anyone know of any that fit that and are public domain?

Thanks for your help.

I really don't know if it's in public domain, but there's a charming classroom sequence (more specifically, a spelling bee) near the beginning of Griffith's True Heart Susie (1919).

Mary Pickford's REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM also has a classroom scene.

I used to own a 16mm silent short of Our Gang's "Bored of Education". Most of that silent short was in an old schoolhouse.

Come to think of it, so does Pickford's Poor Little Rich Girl (1917), though she's the only student present.

I believe an early Charles Ray feature has a classroom sequence, though I can't remember the title to save my life!

Alice Gets in Dutch (1924) has some charming classroom views in its wraparound segments. Even with its Disney pedigree, I think it's PD.

THE OLD SWIMMIN' HOLE (1921), is the film Dean Thompson is thinking of, and, I think, the 1917 TOM SAWYER should be of use. Of course, OUR GANG as well, but (sigh) no Miss Crabtree in the silent films...

Ben Model should have a list of school silents. In his series at MoMA this past winter he and Steve Massa showed Oh, Teacher! from 1924 and School Begins from 1928.

As does M'Liss (1917), and the earlier Pickford film on which it was based, The Schoolteacher and The Waif (1912).

There's a schoolroom scene with children and a teacher in William deMille's Miss Lulu Bett (1921).

I believe that the Will Rogers version of HEADLESS HORSEMAN has scenes of Schoolmaster Crane and his charges.

Maybe a bit more specialized, but both The Vanishing American and Redskin have scenes in Indian schools.

There's also a Broncho Billy film that has a scene in a classroom but I can't recall it's name.

Commencement Day (1924)
is an Our Gang short that
takes place in and on the
grounds of a one room school-
house. I acquired an Excel
projector and reels when I was
10. On one of the reels was a
cutdown of CD. It contained most
of the schoolroom scenes and the
ending when everyone is run out of
it by a swarm of hornets.

The other day I watched THE NEW SCHOOL TEACHER (1924), which was an upload from an Alpha Video, which is usually as sign of a PD print...
