Magic Lantern Shows are still being performed.
The American Magic Lantern Theater can be

So, were lantern slides from silent films in the 20's used as a preview to the film using these lantern projection devices before the movie was shown in the theaters or were they like lobby cards just collector's items?

Lantern slides in the 1920s were used to promote upcoming films and to advertise local businesses. Much like slides were used in multiplexes up to the 1990s before the show. Now that there is a 30-minute video "pre-show", we rarely see static ads.
