Help with Mystery Photo NOT Valentino

I just won this as part of a lot of two photos. This is not a Valentino film. Anyone recognize this? Still code is -383

It might be a talkie, nothing on the back except a mis-identification that it's a Valentino film.

I'm sorry, I have no idea, don't know if this matters, but I recently bid and won a lot of 3 film stills, same website as you, Tom Tyler, two mis-identified, weirdest part is one of the mis-identified ones has the correct film name on the back, "Wild to Go."

The good news is I was able to ID the other mystery film still.

Good luck with IDing your mystery film still.

I don't recognize any of the presumed principals, but could this be a Vitaphone short from the late twenties? Maybe a scene from Carmen? Perhaps Ron will know--

Alice Gentle was in a Scene from Carmen (1929) , and the woman in the middle looks a bit like her: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ephone.jpg

Could it be Metropolitan Opera star Anna Case in the early Vitaphone short, sometimes played on TCM?

No- Case wears a huge lace mantilla over a tall comb in that.

Long Shot Dept

I haven't seen the film since I was a kid, but could it be the operetta that Harpo dislikes intensely in THE COCONUTS (1929)?

The still code on this film is "383". Usually still codes have a two-part code. The first part indicates the production (title) and the second part indicates the numbered photo from the film.

Independent productions and small studios only used one number for their codes, because they didn't make a lot of films. They could look at the still and tell which production it was from.

Image

The production number for The Cocoanuts (1929) was 1192, so original photos from this film will have a code of "1192-" and then a number. For some reason stills from this film (The Cocoanuts) also have a code of "F5-" plus a number. This still is definitely not from that film.

Just a thought - it could be a glitch on the image, but it looks to me like there's a dash before that 383, almost as if it was a two part code where someone forgot to fill the first part in.

Another possibility is a non-American film. It does seem quite elaborate for an American independent film.
