Just when you thought you were afraid to go back to look for a Murphy bed....Richard Dix's low-rent detective in Mysterious Intruder, an entry in Columbia's The Whistler series, has one in his appropriately low-rent apartment.

TCM showed the whole series (or most of it) recently, and I'm having a lot of fun with these brisk, entertaining mysteries based on the popular radio series. Usually there's some sort of twist ending just to juice things up a bit, I'm guessing Rod Serling grew up on the show and films.

The Russian film THE GREAT CONSOLER (1933) has a Murphy Bed of sorts When Jimmy Valentine opens a cupboard to get to his cracksman's tools. Think this was about 42m into the picture.

And another country is heard from! That makes US, British (an episode of Are You Being Served?), Australian (the Aussie version of the show), Germany (two Fritz Lang movies) and now Russia! Representative or is it culturally biased?

Boys Will Be Boys (1932, Universal, 20 min.) Hilarious farce with cabaret girl Sally Blaine stringing along a father, Richard Carle (brilliant), his son Frank Albertson (top-billed), tough guy Big Boy Williams AND Jack Duffy (uncredited). Just before the fade out at the convergent climax, a Murphy bed drops down with 2 more guys in it. Very Hal Roach cuz made by Roach veterans, George Stevens and others. Newly preserved by Universal courtesy Mike Feinberg and screened last night at Cinecon.

Has anyone mentioned THE BAT (1926 version) where Lizzie the maid (Louise Fazenda) hides under a Murphy, which immediately folds up!

While reading Steve Massa's new book, Slapstick Divas, I spotted a copy of a publicity photo from Smiles, with the Lee sisters on a Murphy Bed, with Katherine Griffith beneath.

Did a search and it didn't pop up, so I apologize if it's been mentioned, but Groucho has a murphy bed (cunningly disguised as a file cabinet) in his lawyer character's office in the Marx Brothers' The Big Store. See for yourselves!

I was worried that maybe the search function wasn't very thorough, but I did search "Murphy bed" "Marx" "Groucho" and "Big Store". Surprised to see nothing came up!

Also, from The Big Store...

My bad, it's from The Big Store as well (the official Murphy Bed website called it "a Marx Brothers TV show" and I carried on the mistake for about 30 seconds, until I edited my post).

In Mickey's Trailer (1938) (Disney), the bed in which Donald Duck is sleeping folds into the wall of the trailer, as does almost every other fixture and piece of furniture.
