Jack Duffy DVD Giveaway (Now on Ebay)

PostMon May 14, 2018 12:06 am

Well, this was a very busy weekend for me. Not only did I finish up the Texas Guinan set but I also finished up a set of Jack Duffy films. Two are silent and one is an early sound short. The two silent shorts are Chicken Feathers, and The Court Plasterer. The sound one is The Cow's Kick. The Cow's Kick comes from my Nitrate Collection. It is a political short that was an anti daylight savings time piece. Apparently California had a vote in November 1930 over the daylight savings time issue.

I will give away 3 copies of the DVD to randomly selected members who post on this thread. Only your first post will count in case you post more than once. You have until noon Thursday May 17th to post. Hope to see your name here soon!

I mentioned below that I am adding a 4th film from my nitrate collection to this DVD which is Black Eyes and Blue starring Sid Smith, Paul Parrott, and Dixie Lamont.

Not one of my favorite screen comics -- mostly because, well, someone has to be average and a lot of his work was for the Christies, whose style of screen comedy is neither as character-rich as Roach's nor as outrageous as Sennett, but sometimes fell into the more mechanical rhythms that people who don't like comedy think is what comedy is all about.

Still, not everyone can be the best, and Duffy is good, and his shtick is amusing. And your generosity is gracious, whether I win or not.

In the late 1920's Al Christie promoted his comedies that has realistic looking an acting characters, yet the Duffy comedies were putting money in Christie's bank account.

I'd like to see that parody of a campaign for daylight savings time.

Anybody who has read either of my books on silent film comedy know that Jack Duffy is my guilty pleasure. For some reason unfathomable to many (hi Bob!), the guy absolutely slays me even when his films aren't actually very funny.

M.A.,

I forgot to ask you to put my name on the drawing. If I don't win, I'll buy it later. That Holly comedy you have just added is a must have.

I like Jack too. Many who will watch his comedies for the first time will be amazed to know that Jack was in his late 30's and early 40's when he made these Christie comedies. Jack later became a make-up man at Paramount.

I am not a fan of standard time ( getting dark at 4:30 in December). I love DST, but am willing to see why others were opposed.

Crimemny but you make me sound ungrateful.

You aren’t sitting on another few Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Drews, are you? I’ll whine a lot if it’ll get them released.

Didn't mean to do that at all. I was searching for some info on Sid Smith and came across a post in which you said you enjoyed Sid Smith and Paul Parrott together and thought "hey I've got one that is almost ready I can add that on with the Jack Duffy films!". So three lucky people will benefit from a post you made some time before.

Sorry no such luck on the Sidney Drews. But you never know when another will pop up!
