Deciphering this...... does this sound like a good candidate for rescue? It's already digitized????

I checked also on VALLEY OF THE GIANTS (1919) but LOC says the Russian archive has it, not LOC.....

I'll kick in and so will others because we trust you. However, I think a title would help.

If it's a Clarence Badger picture starring Bebe Daniels, I don't need the title. Otherwise...

No I'm just trying to figure out exactly what this is at this point.....

As I understand it 7 reels of 7 but some titles not in place (but they have them?)

It's already on disk

It has not been restored (so no high definition copy needed)

Reel 1 is from a different source.... not processed? whatever that means

35MM was destroyed?

It's a PD 1920 title, no donor restrictions, but NOT restored so it wouldn't look as good as ENCHANTMENT.

Sounds like some reassembly would be necessary....

Am I missing anything ?? (no smart answers necessary).....

Well, let's put some pixs of it's 35mm film clips and the reels here to gain some clear proof.

Ed, just sent you a PM, but it doesn't appear to be going thru. Apologies if it comes thru twice.

Update from LOC:

Digital File to DVD (NTSC)
Cost: $266.00
Standard Delivery: 5-7 business days

35mm Film to Blu-Ray (1080p, 24fps)
Cost: $1,029.50
Standard Delivery: approx. 6-8 weeks
Note: All HD silent film transfers are created at 1080p 24fps with a 1:1 frame ratio for preservation and not at the visually-correct speed (16-18fps).

The film has NOT been restored. HD (Blu) would likely have to go thru the Maine film archive (again) and be assembled.

So is it worth getting HD of a non-restored film film vs the cheaper DVD ??? I've been told by someone who has seen this that it's in OK shape.

If the high-definition transfer could be converted to other media at comparable definition, then it would make sense to me to get the initial transfer at the highest definition possible. On the other hand, if this were being done as a Kickstarter project, you might price it for the lower rate, but maintain the option for the higher rate if the contributions covered it.

Ed,

Let me suggest taking incremental steps. As Kickstarter projects go, $266 isn't much to raise to obtain the basic plain vanilla DVD from a file. I am assuming the film in question is long unseen by any of us. So for a collective investment of $266 and a relatively quick turnaround time from LOC, let's see what we've got. If enough folks are impressed to support an upgraded HD edition, then it would be easy to raise the $1,030 and worth all your follow up work with the main archive.

Ed,

If you are going to do any work on the film, adding titles, editing things out etc, you do not want to be working from a DVD. A DVD will have a compressed file; even if you are sent a Blu-Ray if you are going to do any work on the film you're going to have to rip the file and convert it to something you can work with for any editing you may need to do. If there is a digital file already at LoC, then what you want is to get a digital file like a QuickTIme ProRes on a hard drive, which is one of the (affordable) options that LoC offers, so it can be edited.

If I'm the "someone who's seen this" I'd recommend getting the file and doing the work.

Thanks... Good idea, Bob.

And yes Ben it's you. What I got last time were HD Pro-Res files (4 of them) on an external drive, but I couldn't work with them at all. Luckily the film didn't need much work and I was able to "oversee" the work at the local archive.

Before committing to an expensive project, I think Bob's idea is really good. DVD and see what we have....

Not sure "contributor" is the right word. LOL

I have ordered the DVD and will see in about a week what we have to work with. If the video quality is as good as Getting Mary Married I'll be happy. I know it won't come close to Enchantment, which was a miracle of luck. There are so few silents that looks that good.

Ed,

If you're willing to make a copy of the DVD, I'd be happy to chip in to help you cover the cost of obtaining it from LOC - sight unseen. I trust your judgment.
