When is the cutoff date for this? I've just had to pay our income tax for the year and we owed quite a bit. :(

Pledged! Incredible work, absolutely adore Marion Davies but it can be quite difficult having to track down some of the films she starred in.

Also, does anyone know if there are DVD-Rs available for Marianne (silent version), Tillie the Toiler, Beverly of Graustark, Lights of Old Broadway or Janice Meredith being sold somewhere?

They all have over 250 votes on IMDB so I presume their available somewhere.

All are floating in gray market. Janice Meredith is complete in OK-good copy, Marianne has a bad flicker, both Lights of Old Broadway and Beverly of Graustark are missing some material and are poor copies, and Tillie the Toiler has a time code. Some of these are listed as being in the MGM archive. If so, they may be in better shape.

What exactly is the MGM archive? Is there such a thing or does it mean MGM library (which now belongs to Warners)?

Yeah, well, there are reviews of a lot of Norma Talmadge movies by people who have never seen them, and not just the usual suspects.

Janice Meredith has shown up at MOMA, so that's not black market.

Does that mean that the staff is contributing?

No, it doesn't mean anything that I can see  It might mean something if one were doing a blind search for projects....

But we've topped 80%

Have you ever thought of adding a second, cheaper option of a download? I think this project is a great idea but the $25 tag is giving me pause for thought...

No I had not thought of that but it might be an idea.... My gut reaction is that at this point it might be unfair to people who have already pledged $25 for a disk but who might have preferred a download.

Any opinions?

This isn't picking up a DVD at your local Walmart. A lot of work goes into this and I think that $25 is a very fair deal. Once you start providing a cheaper option, many people will switch to that and you might not get enough to cover the cost. If $25 is giving you pause, then you just don't want this film bad enough.

I agree this is worth $25, but some of us are on budgets. The idea of putting this on streaming at a lower price will make this available to a larger audience and is a great idea.

For the moment, though, the question is getting enough people to kick in enough money for Ed to get the work done.

I certainly understand budget constraints, and that $25 is more than the typical DVD. However, given all of the work that goes into this, and the fact that the money is not only going towards the DVD but to the rescue efforts, then $25 is very reasonable. My concern is that if a download option for less than $25, is offered, the overall amount of the kickstarter received will drop and may take longer to fund or not fund at all.

Perhaps. Or perhaps the lower production cost would drop the amount of money needed and the greater number of people who would kick in, say, $10 for downloading would make it easier to raise the money.

I don't think anyone is disputing that this project is worth paying $25 for a dvd version. Some people are saying "I can't afford a dvd version priced at $25." It's great for those of us who can and bad for those who cannot.

I don't know the details of Ed's production but can tell you from my own experience that the making of the DVDs for backers is a small fraction of the budget, especially if the plan is to send everyone a disc in a paper sleeve. That's maybe 35¢ plus postage apiece. Unless I'm mistaken — and Ed, correct me if I'm wrong — making the film available on a private YouTube or Vimeo link instead of on physical media would only drop the backer price to $24.

I don't know about others here, but buying films is necessary to my well being. To paraphrase Erasmus, when I get a little money I buy movies. I'm not kidding when I say I haven't bought new clothes in well over a year. I'll sacrifice a lot of other expenses too if it allows me to get the movies I really want, ones that I will return to again and again. I always get those essential blu-rays when they come out. I can't resist. So when I have an opportunity to get a Marion Davies film that otherwise would languish in a musty archive I'll jump at the chance.

A year...? Any garment less than 5 yrs old I consider "not broken in." I've got Pendleton wool shirts (showing negligible wear) I inherited from my father; they've probably passed the half-century mark.

Yes I started with "disk in paper sleeve" as I did with Enchantment, figuring to start with the least and work up as money permits. Adding a DVD case (which then requires art) more than doubles the postage costs, let alone supplies. And that's just for domestic.

Looking at JVC Taiyo Yuden 16X DVD-R 4.7GB Silver Thermal Lacquer disks....

Ed,

I've already paid my $25 but I have no problem with your offering a DVD or a download, even if there's a pledge differential. You might consider giving the $25 DVD pledges the download for free. Just a suggestion and I won't get heartburn with whatever you decide.
