I'm happy to say that I sold Ben my Kodascope print of The Whirlwind with the hope that it would be released by him, with musical accompaniment, for the greater public to enjoy, rather than just gathering dust in my home. And here it is! He's doing it! Additionally, since I just supported the project with my pledge, I will again have this film to view, along with the other films in this collection! This is a great way for rare and one of a kind films to be shared with others in our community. Support this series with your rare film prints and pledges. Thanks again.

Ben is back with the next step in his relentless campaign to bankrupt the fans of silent m---

Wait a minute! Jack Duffy!

The DREWS!!

MORE JACK DUFFY!!!!

My kids don't need university educations after all. Ben Model needs my $30!

(Actually I tried to pledge $25 but the discriminatory and flagrantly bigoted Kickstarter site automatically translated the Canadian dollars into $30...)

Jim, actually the add'l $5 is an amount added to all non-US backers to help cover int'l postage. The $25 pledge includes domestic postage.

Thanks for your pledge!

Right. Like I said, rampant anti-Canadianism!

Of course, what I'm really waiting for is volume 2 of the Marcel Perez collection!

I'm in as well!

And now I need to order the first and second volumes, right? I don't want to be confused once this finally drops.

Jim, Marcel Perez 2 will have to wait until there's enough material accumulated. We're working on it!
BTW, I just made an AP3 update video, and utilized Kickstarter's new feature to add captioning.

Martin, the new physical proof of the Musty vol 2 DVD is on its way to me and once I've approved it I can "pull the trigger" on releasing it.

Dave/Murnau — yes, unless you have the backstory from vol 1 and the exposition in vol 2, volume 3's shorts will not make any sense. ;)

I'm OK with paying extra for shipping to Canada (and with a pledge of $75.00, with the inclusion of a second disc, I pay even more). After all, we are a foreign country and international postage rates do apply.

I'm also loath to whine about such things for fear of coming across as an ingrate: historically, I can't think of another foreign country that has enjoyed the same degree of unfettered access to American film that we have. And we've enjoyed this access because when is comes to film distribution, Canada has always been considered to be part of the U.S. domestic market, so "rights" issues which bedevil other jurisdictions simply don't exist. For example: the TCM Canada schedule is virtually identical to the U.S. schedule, something other non-North American posters on this board would die for.

My real reason to post this is to push it back up to the first thing you see in Silent News. It's already 80% funded and it would be cool if it were funded in two days.

Well, I don't want to be an ingrate either, but those distribution deals that treated Canada as a part of the USA domestic market are precisely why we never created an indigenous film industry up here, at least until very recently when those deals expired or started breaking down and we began being treated as the foreign country we are.

By the same token, US television programming flooded Canada from the earliest days in part (not entirely) because of distribution deals. It took billions in government funding to the CBC and the creation of the CRTC as a regulatory agency to force an opening for Canadian-made programming on our own airwaves. Canadian TV has never recovered, despite a few bright spots such as SCTV.

At least Internet-based programming is getting off to a start with a slightly more level playing-field. Thanks to that, we gave you Justin Bieber, and you may keep him.

And speaking of the Internet, thank you to Ben for providing captioning on his latest video. The pop-up toolbar keeps blocking out the captions, though, and the video is so short that by the time I get rid of the bar, the message is over! Bit of a technological burp from Kickstarter, I think.

Jim, sorry about the captioning being hidden like that. I added the captions especially for you, since I know you've mentioned this before. At least they've added the feature to videos on KS, and hopefully they'll fix this issue.

I'm in too, Ben! In fact, I just pushed you over the top. NOW GET BUSY!!!

(Just kidding -- this is the third project of yours that I have backed, and I've loved the results every time. Now I really need to catch up and get the first two AP DVDs . . .)

Now 101% funded. Thanks to all who pledged -- more than 1/3 of the pledges came from Nitrateville.

Now to come up with a stretch goal or two. (And, no...BluRay is not an option on a project like this.)

I was just posting that 100 people have contributed to Ed's Restless SexKickstarter project and how this meant about a hundred extra copies of the movie in existence. Coincidentally there is the same number of contributors for this project!

Synchronicity that we both hit 100 pledges on the same day, I suppose. Rosemary, glad you "got in in time", although there's still 2 more weeks to go... ;)

Thanks for posting a reminder nudge, Bob.

Why pledge, you may ask, if the project budget has already been reached?

First of all, you'll get the DVD about 2 weeks before it even goes on sale on Amazon. Another perk is that I continue sending updates to project backers long after the DVD is released. You can see the 64 updates sent to backers of the first Accidentally Preserved Kickstarter on this page — that Kickstarter ended in Nov 2012, and the most recent update sent to backers went out a couple weeks ago. The 54 updates sent to Musty Suffer backers between Aug 2013 and this month can be seen here.

Updates I send out include insider info (film finds, festival screenings, launch events) that's snuck out to backers before it gets announced publicly, as well as fun things like links to be able to purchase one of my new releases before I post the official announcement and Amazon page. For example, a few weeks ago, all 277 unique backers from all 3 of my previous Kickstarters (AP, Musty, Perez) were sent an exclusive link to purchase Musty vol 2 at half price a week or two before it went on sale at full price at Amazon.

Thanks.

Ben
