New "Cartoon Roots" Blu-ray/DVD project on Kickstarter

PostMon Aug 03, 2015 9:27 am

Dear Nitratevillains,

I'm very pleased to let all of you know that my latest project dealing with early cartoons is now in progress: a new Blu-ray/DVD combo collection!

Cartoon Roots: The Bray Studios--Animation Pioneers will be release #2 in my catalog of professional home video collections. Much to my surprise and satisfaction, the original Cartoon Roots, released at the end of 2014, has been a very popular title, considering the niche nature and popularity of early animation history. My long term goal has always been to properly release more early cartoons to the general public, and an introductory Bray cartoon set seemed like the smartest entry to continue on with this series.

I've turned to crowd funding to make this release a reality, and am hoping that any of you who are interested in this project can make a pledge to guarantee the creation of this new collection. In any case, it's a great way to pre-order the set. To read more about the project and lend your support, visit the project's Kickstarter page...and, if possible, please share this with any other silent film, animation, media history, comic and illustration aficionados who might find this of interest.

Thank you kindly for your continued support!

Well, I was going to write a few words about what a good guy Tommy Joe is, but Mike's interview with him takes care of that encomium. A look at the five-minute video should convince anyone who wants to help save old films that this is a good project to help out.

I'm kicking this back up to the top of the queue.

I think this is filling out at an amazing rate, in no small part because Tommy Jose has the folks at the Cartoon Research site contributing also. Still for anyone who has joined in the past few days or for whom this has gotten lost in the scrum....

I'm so elated that the initial project goal has been met! Many thanks to the Nitratevillains who've helped so far; there were a bunch. I've posted an update about how extra funds raised will continue to help here.

And to think there's still a month left in the campaign! :D

There's still three weeks to help fund this project, but wouldn't it be best to do it now, lest it slip your mind?

This one has passed the $10,000 mark and Tommy Joe has announced some interesting stretch goals with a week to go.

There's exactly one week left to the Cartoon Roots Kickstarter campaign. If and when it gets to $11,500, I'll consider adding new reward levels where pre-existing backers will be able to raise their pledges and effectively pre-order the third collection--a big boost which would hopefully further guarantee that the stretch goal is met. Fingers crossed, and thanks again for everyone's support here!

That's right, Bob!

There are just 48 hours to go now on the Cartoon Roots Kickstarter. I've posted an update today asking for peoples' feedback to see if I should introduce new reward levels so the stretch goal can be more easily met.

Check it out, and thanks again to everyone here who has been supportive!

Just one day left! Since my last post here, I have indeed introduced new reward levels where pre-existing backers can raise their current pledges and also pre-order the additional Bobby Bumps collection. We're now getting pretty darn close to the stretch goal as a result! :D

This handy update explains the new reward levels more thoroughly:

Enjoyed this YouTube clip of the progress of restoration on a Bray cartoon, Police Dog on the Wire (1916).

It really is a blessing to such poor ol' films, what lovingly performed digital restoration can do.

Why not stabilize using the printed-in perfs as anchor points? They look like they would track perfectly with the image, reducing the usual weird rotating and warping behavior.

You can't stabilize on the perfs. Well, you can, but it doesn't help. I did some of the work on this one. The trouble is that the nitrate was warped when the the negative and print were made, so a great deal of the weave was printed in.

I encountered much the same problem with King of the Kongo. In that case, the print was warped AND the nitrate was warped, and to get a half-way stable picture, you sometimes had to stabilize two or three times on different objects.

What you have to do is break it down shot by shot and find and object that doesn't move in the shot and stabilize on that. Then you hope that nothing walks in front of that, or the shot is ruined. It takes some creativity, but it's do-able.

Eric (who also removed telecine warp, interlace artifacts, splice marks, and dust from this cartoon.)

You'll also notice that the preprint perfs continuously bob down and disappear into the physical perfs in the print, which means that a tracker would not be able to latch onto them for any significant portion of a shot.

This film was an incredibly tricky one to tackle. Aside from the printed-in warp and weave, we noticed that one or more layers of the original artwork would move slightly at any given time in a shot, while other elements remain static. This further complicates matters! For most shots in the film, we had to use three or four different tracking points (sometimes more) in conjunction with each other to achieve the most pleasing 'average' possible.

I just got my copy of the Blu-Ray combo pack, and a very nice job of production indeed, Tommy Jose. Those of you who didn't contribute to this when it was a Kickstarter project, but still want a copy -- I've seen it listed for sale on Amazon.com at

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i ... ay+studios

It's also been favorably reviewed at Cartoon Research.

Thanks Bob! Between trying to get all the Kickstarter rewards packed and mailed (still in the midst of that, and then fulfilling Amazon orders afterward out of fairness) I haven't been updating the various forums myself yet.

It was a long time coming but I'm VERY happy with the results and I think all of you will be, too. Thanks again to all here who supported this project. Will be posting more soon!

Nearly all of the remaining Kickstarter reward copies should be out by this weekend, and I'm also in the midst of processing and packing new Amazon orders.

Here's a link to Jerry Beck's favorable review of the collection on Cartoon Research. It also includes a nifty HD trailer that my colleague Devon Baxter cut together.

I'm looking forward to hearing how folks here enjoy the results once they get their copies...thanks!
