I always react pleasurably when I see the character vignettes before old movies, particularly of course associated with the Warner Bros films. There's a very cleverly put-together mock-up of the intro to the lost Convention City on Youtube with character vignettes. It's fun trying to identify the actual films the vignettes are taken from.

For what it's worth, sometime in the early eighties I saw the film director Joseph H. Lewis interviewed at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley and he told the audience that while he was at Warner Brothers in the early thirties he came up with this technique.(At least at Warner Brothers).

Joseph H. Lewis
He told the audience this was his introduction to working in film, a few years before he worked his way up to being a director.
