Where would I be able to see promotional/advertising materials from RKO Pictures?

Larry Edmunds? The dealer's room at Cinevent? John McElwee's house?

The Margaret Herrick library has press kits and lobby cards for many, many RKO titles in its collection, as well as the stills collection of the studio. Time Warner still possesses the records, and they are in Atlanta and inaccessible.

Miss Dupont.

Does the Herrick Library require making an appointment like LOC or UCLA's library? I have scheduled research trips in June to LOC and August to UCLA and need to view a few non-digitized photos at Herrick Library of Mark Hamilton and was wondering if this requires advance appointments like other institutions?

Hi,
If you're just looking at core biography or production stills, you do not need an appointment. If the photos are part of a special collection, which you can find online in their catalog, then yes, you will need to make an appointment. You might want to check out their periodical collection, they are indexing articles by person's name and film title, so you might find stuff there. They also have the entire run of Variety through the Variety digital subscription. They also have clipping files you can access just by walking in.

That is great information. I will try to combine the UCLA trip with the Herrick trip together since they are close to each other geographically and see if either has what I am searching for.

Thanks again!

Here's one of RKO's grandest promotional items - the original KING KONG Pressbook (scanned from my copy):

Suggest you right-click and "save link as"

Also includes the original published sheet music for KING KONG.

I came across the following by accident while researching something else:

At Carleton College, Laurence McKinley Gould Library, Northfield, MN

The BFI Cinema Pressbooks 1920-1940 microfiche collection contains 774 pressbooks from eight major American studios and several smaller independents and covers the 1920s and 1930s.

85 of the pressbooks in this collection are of RKO films

A few on the list:

The Age of Consent 1932
The Age of Innocence 1934
Alice Adams 1935
Ann Vickers 1933
Bachelor Bait 1934
Bachelor Mother 1939
Carefree 1938
Crime Doctor 1934

If I ever find it in my house(I hope it is here), I was given the 1939 RKO release schedule, with a hard cover I think, for Australia. The man who gave it to me to read said his father was in the business at the time. The customers name was Charlie Leathhead, if I remember correctly.
