Regarding Joan Crawford:

"In Joan Crawford's case, at least, the onscreen hardness mirrored her true personality. Child torturer and castrating wife, Crawford was a vicious woman"
- Foster Hirsch in Film Noir; The Dark Side of the Screen

...and I was enjoying this book, too.

Hah! Don't know about new, though. This was written in 1981.

Hirsch's study is really a very good overview of Film Noir, and I use it as a text in my class. But yes, when I first read his book and came to that sentence about Crawford, I flinched. It's a cheap shot and unworthy of Hirsch's professionalism.

It is actually a really good overview, as you correctly say.
I'll still recommend it, despite the tabloid style remark.

Hirsch was on CUNY's "City Cinematheque" last weekend, speaking about THE BIG COMBO.

He certainly seemed to know the genre, although there were a few comments he made that seemed to be classic scholarly over-think.
