Best Silent Film Sites and Journals

PostWed May 07, 2014 5:54 am

It seems that every time someone publishes a new book on silent film (Jim Niebaur's Book of the Month Club -- he writes a book per month) or someone produces a new DVD of silent comedies (Ben Model's Lost Compilation of Not-Lost Comedies), the announcement is quickly followed by postings directing people to links where the items are reviewed.

Well, why not bring together a listing of the best such review sources and post it here, all in one place for easy reference?

Since I'm not an Internet junkie or social media maven, I'm totally dependent on your contributions to this thread. I suggest listing under the following headings:

1) Journals (both on-line and off-line).
2) Listservs.
3) Blogs
4) Websites that are not any of the above (e.g., SilentComedyMafia.com)
5) Facebook pages or similar (Youtube?)

Thanks!

For journals, there's Griffithiana, Film History, and I believe the Film Journal, all more academic. For Facebook pages, there's Silents Majority, Silents Please, Silent Film Group, Silent Film Lounge. I occasionally write about silent films and personalities at the LA Daily Mirror blog.

Thanks for starting off this thread, Frederica and Miss Dupont.

Could we have some contributions from other people, please? Any silent comedy links/journals/blogs? Where's the Harry Langdon Society, Sons of the Desert, Annette Lloyd's Harold Lloyd blog/site, Turpinutz, Brent Walker's blog, etc.? Would be wonderful to have piles of them all listed conveniently in one location -- namely, right here.

Given that I started this thread and it has proven a thundering failure, I should post a few contributions of my own in a last effort to rouse some enthusiasm. So, here are a handful of sites:

- feetofmud.com (Harry Langdon appreciation site)
- moviessilently.com
- http://blogs.indiewire.com/leonardmaltin/
- LA Daily Mirror blog: http://ladailymirror.com/category/books-and-authors/ (this is the link to the site mentioned by Miss Dupont)
- www.sotd.org (international home site for the Sons Of The Desert organization)
