Spyware

PostFri Aug 17, 2012 9:35 am

A few weeks ago, this anomaly begin appearing on every page of text from N'ville or any other website: scattered throughout the text will be words both highlighted in red & underlined, which, if touched by the cursor, pull up some unrelated advertisement. The several spyware-removal programs I've applied (including the best, reputably, Malwarebytes), seem to eliminate the problem for a few hours, but always, it returns. The only sites I visit everyday (usually every few hours) are Google, Wikipedia, TCM, & N'ville, so would I be correct in assuming my computer is being "reinfected" from one of those sites? It's driving me mad.

Here is a link with some information about a similar problem. I did a search to find this link. If the link doesn't apply, maybe a search with your specific symptoms will bring up better information:

If it's similar to what I've had on my own website, it's not spyware, nor is it on your own computer. Someone has managed to break into the hosting website and place unauthorized links onto other websites. In my case, I've been infected twice: red underlined hotlinks as you describe, linking to pages for clothing in the UK. After I discovered it the first time, I just reloaded my website and that wiped them out. My host assured that they would attempt to prevent another incident, but no, 6 months later, they returned with links to another site. Now I check on a regular basis and will just reload those pages if need be; annoying, but at least it easily fixes the problem.

BTW, I've moved this topic to a more appropriate forum, "Site Chat".

Mother of pearl--it worked! (Refreshing the page--which it never occurred to me to try.) Now can you tell me how to identify the criminal perpetrator...so that I'll know where to send the anthrax letter I've prepared.

Actually, I didn't mean that you should refresh the page - if that worked, the "bad" version must have been in your cache and then cleared upon refreshing. In my case, I had to reload ("republish") my own business website to my hosting company, which would have nothing to do with pages in my cache. Anyway, glad it worked and hopefully it will continue to do so.

Anthrax letters are typically against NitrateVille policy, I should add.

"Typically"?? Please identify exceptions. We may need to know in future.
