How many films are in your collection?

PostSat Aug 26, 2017 8:45 am

I picked up a copy of A Thousand Cuts book. I was surprised at some of the photos. I thought the big time collectors would have slick, organized archives. Their collections looked kinds jumbled up. (That is how I roll, just less films and less space than the big guys.)

I've got about 90 - reg 8mm, a few super 8's and about 25 - 16mm. I hope to expand my 16mm to 50 to 75 reels over time.

I'm just starting to get them organized, go through them and see what repairs are needed...cleaning, splicing, documenting etc. A couple of the films I bought did not match the title. But I waited too late to complain. Well, live and learn!

Where do you fit in?

Are you happy with the organization?

I have in excess of 10000 films, all on DVD. They are in white paper sleeves, arranged in fabric boxes (Ikea), stored alphabetically. Easy to access, easy to file new additions to the collection.

I got a bunch of DVDs, but I'm talking about actual reels of film.

With DVD's I have about 600 - 800 (estimate...never counted em)

Oooooooo...that is impressive Ray! Spielberg would be drooling!

I only collect old porno 1930's to 1970's or so. Preferably BW. I came to the party late and just by chance. I was doing some work with a 8mm film from the 1970's and decided to make up a little collection of 8mm. That branched out to 16mm.

Here are some photos of the 8mm. (The 16mm have no boxes)

I prefer 16mm porno films, but they seem hard to find.

I was gunna stop collecting DVD's when I got to 2,000, but I think I've got an addiction problem - I've currently got about 5,000. I have to stop collecting soon as I am running out of room. HELP! :D

(Back in the nonetoon soxties I used to collect films on Standard then Super 8 - but they were cut-downs from features. I was only young then and couldn't afford to collect many)

No films in my collection, but the number of DVD's, VHS's, and Beta's would be pretty staggering if I ever stopped to count them (which would take about three days to do!)

Sitting at the desk in my den at home, I am facing four storage cabinets which each hold probably 100+ discs/cassettes. They have four drawers piled on top of them, each holding 20 VHS tapes. Beside them is a bookcase filled to overflowing. Behind me are two tall bookcases stuffed with DVDs. I've got another 500 or more mixed bags in an entertainment centre in the living-room.

My wife and kids each have hundreds more in their own spaces.

Oh, and I have about 100 more sitting on the desk itself. Those are the ones I haven't watched yet.

That's pretty good Jim, but you shouldn't worry until you find yourself crawling all over your collection to reach the door out of your den.

I've got 229 16mm prints, not counting junk dupes that I have not been able to get rid of. That includes 27 feaures. Most of my shorts are Blackhawk prints of slapstick comedies.

At last count I had 962 titles on 16mm. That doesn't count prints I consider not good enough to go in my collection of which I may have half the earlier number. There's always film coming in and going out, so it's a fluid situation.

I probably have about 200 films in 16mm, 8mm, Super 8, and 9.5mm if you lump them all together. Its a jumble of stuff, weird dupes, blackhawk prints, couple of Castle Films. I have two shelves of dvd's and blu-ray's too. In all I've found three lost comedy shorts in my five or six years of collecting.

I used to have four 35mm films, all of which were stolen out of my apartment by a former roommate in 1971 or 1972. I now have one 16mm W. C. Fields film. I just donated all of my VHS tapes to the public library, which accepted all 2,000 very graciously. I still have 5,000 DVDs, and I intend to keep them. I'm a happy camper. Just received two more DVDs today in the mail from Britain. Intend to keep on ordering them - at least presently...

Only DVDs and Blu Rays, some remaining VHS tapes, and still some 50 Laserdiscs left. Number of features on DVD and VHS between 5000 and 10,000 - I fear by now closer to 10,000. Donald - you will never stop....

The work is to keep everything orderly identified. Benefit is that if you want to see a picture, chances are you have it - and find it.
