What happened to the last print of The Miracle Man (1919)?

PostSun Apr 15, 2018 10:17 am

A complete print of Lon Chaney's "The Miracle Man" existed in 1935, and a couple excerpts were included in Paramount's "Movie Memories" (1935). I cannot locate any reference to a vault fire, but realize that many production houses disposed of their silent film holdings. Do any production records indicate what happened to Paramount's print?

It most likely deteriorated with the rest of Paramount's silents - roughly 80% are gone. They didn't junk their films in bulk as Universal did, but their policy was to discard anything that was beginning to decompose. If one reel started to go, the whole feature was discarded. The remaining survivors were donated to LOC in the late 60s, IIRC.

Was that fate suspected or presumed by David Shepard (or Kevin Brownlow) after it wasn't among those donated to the LoC in the 60s? If I recall, was it this, The Big City, or London After Midnight that Brownlow sought prints for around the world prior to a Lon Chaney documentary in the early 00s?

Paramount in Hollywood is said to have a vault fire many years ago that destroyed silent in a vault. Something to do with a spark from a light switch inside the vault that should have been outside. Who knows? Stories do change over the years.
