I agree that it's vaudeville performers Joe Weber and Lew Fields. Here is a photo for comparison...

If I remember correctly, a clip of this film is in Ray Pointer's "Max Fleischer's Koko Song Cartunes" as an example of an early sound film. Nice to see an original nitrate chunk!

Darren, as I recall, LoC has a print of this, but it's not in very good condition. You should contact them about upgrading this if the first part is still in good condition.

If MY memory serves me, a complete print of this--as well as other DeForest shorts is on Ray Pointer's DVD: FIRST SOUND OF MOVIES. Quality excellent on that presentation.

An update; The Library of Congress told me that they did a restoration on a 35mm print a while back so they don't have use for this fragment. Instead of having it sitting next to my monitor why not have fun with it???

I'm taking it into the back yard, set up my pocket camera and video the fragment burning.

Its been decomposing since I got it and been sitting on my PC desk for a while.

I did a test burn for my camera and later ran the print through my 35mm viewer.

As of a few moments ago I've completed my first short! It involves the setting aflame the decomposing part of the Weber and Fields fragment and is in the style of a 1920s newsreel subject.

The music picked fits mighty well and the laptop is rendering the file for youtube as I type this.
