INTOLERANCE with Carl Davis in Luxemburg

PostThu Mar 03, 2011 11:23 pm

I have just bought my ticket to see Carl Davis conducting the Luxemburg Symphony Orchestra playing his score for INTOLERANCE on 2 April. I may actually need surgery to get that smile off my face.
I'll keep you posted

Arndt,

You are very fortunate, Carl Davis score to INTOLERANCE is one of the great works of his career. What about the print that is screening though? Is it a recent restoration or a new transfer? The print that aired on Arte Network a few years ago is far and away the best clarity that I have ever seen.

That version isn't available on DVD is it? I do have it on VHS.

Chaneyfan,

:o The print that ran on Arte Network was not the Thames/Photoplay version. But if you combine the Davis score, with the superior quality of that print, you have the best INTOLERANCE ever offered on Home Video. Some of the Arte Network score was pretty good, but it doesn't compare to Davis work. There may have been a laser-disc release of the Thames edition, but I have never seen it anyplace.

I'm just back from Luxemburg, where last night I had the privilege to see Carl Davis conduct his score for INTOLERANCE. It was quite overwhelming. In front of a sold out house Mr Davis whipped the 50 plus strong Luxembourg Symphonic Orchestra up into a frenzy that superbly complemented the climactic events on the big screen. This was the second performance of two. My wife, who really only goes along to silent screenings to humour me, was very enthusiastic, which says a lot.
The print used was the old Photoplay one. I guess that's for reasons of copyright and because that's the one Carl Davis wrote the score for.
I hope Mr Davis stays in good health and can give his audiences many more memorable nights like this one.

I saw the Phantom of the Opera in London last weekend with Carl Davis conducting his score. i have seen the film on video many times and have the Milestone DVD with his score. To say it was an amazing experience is an understatement! Arndt, I agree with your sentiments... we had a memorable day and am looking forward to seeing more films with Davis conducting.

I would love to see Carl Davis conduct one of his silent film scores - I'm very envious of those in Luxemburg.

It seems strange that there seems to be no current DVD available of this film with Davis' score. The Thames version with his score was screened here on free-to-air commercial-free TV last September, and ran 168 minutes (PAL). Better than nothing :? .

I interviewed Carl Davis last February in Paris. Intolerance (with his score) is unlikely to make it onto DVD because Kino has already released another version. The print comes from the Rohauer collection. But he mentioned that other films (with prints coming from this collection) will make it onto DVD. One of them is Broken Blossoms. More info here.

Back in the 1980s, I saw The Big Parade at the Radio City Music Hall, with Carl Davis conducting his score. I hadn't seen that movie at all beforehand, and am glad. What an overwhelming experience!

No matter what the movie is, any opportunity to catch a screening with a live Davis score should be taken. I can only imagine how magnificent that Intolerance screening must have been.

Here's hoping Kino will release Intolerance on Blu-Ray some day, that would be a perfect opportunity to add Carl Davis' score to the movie.

David Shepard has mentioned on this board that a remaster of INTOLERANCE
is likely to be released by him in the near future.

I would also recommend Russell Merritt's excellent article.
It is available in .pdf format with a Google search.

Tha Danish Film Institute produced a beautiful restoration of Intolerance in 2007 that was screened at the Venice Film Festival. It was broadcast on Arte TV. It has also been released on DVD in France (PAL - R2). This 179 min version has a score by two contemporary film composers: Antoine Duhamel and Pierre Jansen. Alas, this score is no patch for the Carl Davis one. The print is superb though.

Carl Davis came out to Oz in the early nineties or was it the late eighties ? (seniors have difficulty with when things actually happened). He conducted a large orchestra playing his accompaniments to three pictures. I stiill retain the memories as his scores were wonderful and fitted each picture beautifully. The prints of the pictures were excellent also - "Ben Hur" I can still recall quite well. He is overdue for another visit!
