So Well Remembered (1947)

PostTue Mar 13, 2012 12:24 pm

Last night, in my continuing quest to see more Patricia Roc, I watched RKO's Anglo-American 1947 film, So Well Remembered (dir. Edward Dmytryk), starring John Mills, Trevor Howard, Martha Scott, and Roc, with narration by a pleasingly-voiced James Hilton, who wrote the book. There's even a cameo appearance by a pretty little girl named Juliet Mills.

I haven't read the book so don't know how strictly the film adheres to the source, but the film either starts out being one story and then takes a sharp left turn into another, or it just meanders a bit before settling down to business. I found Scott ineffective but that might just be me, and as a general rule of thumb, if one has Patricia Roc in a film, one should not wait until halfway into the story to introduce her. These are minor quibbles, however; other than that, So Well Remembered is a worthy way to spend an evening. It's available through Warner Archive.

Have we spent sufficient time on this group gushing about both John Mills and Trevor Howard? I think not.

I once had a really great dream where i was sitting down and watching a whole Trevor Howard film. Too bad that was just a dream because it was a really a good film, i've often wished i could see it again.

It wasn't that dream where Howard and Celia Johnson meet during their daily commute at a train station and fall in love, was it?

Absolutley not! I think John Mills is vastly underrated. Several years ago I had the chance to chat with daughter Haley briefly, and most of the conversation was devoted to me praising her dad.

I have also met Hayley. She was touring Australia with a production of "The King And I" some years ago, and my mother and I bumped into her shopping for souvenirs. She was super nice - my mother, who worshipped her as a teenager, TRULY needed the smelling salts after that meeting. :)

Frederica, if you haven't caught it already, try and track down 'Sir John Mills' Moving Memories'. It's a documentary constructed out of Mills' own home movies from the 50s and 60s - really fascinating stuff.
