Tweet Swedish dialect comedians/actors in film/vaudeville

That's pretty easy to do, it's on Turner Classic Movies tomorrow at 10:00 p.m.

Ann-Margret, who was born in Sweden and emigrated to the U.S. at five years old, played Medda, a vaudeville chanteuse billed as "The Swedish Meadowlark" in the 1992 Disney musical film Newsies. She used a slight Swedish accent for the role.

The character has been changed to an African-American woman in the stage version currently playing in New York.

His fellow "Ford Company" member John Wayne portrayed Swedish sailor Ole Olsen in The Long Voyage Home (1940) and at times almost out-Brendels Brendel: "I'll yust have a yinyer beer."

Louie, Emil Sitka in his supporting roles in Columbia two-reelers occasionally used a Swedish dialect for comedy effect. I don't recall him doing it in the Stooge films but he did the singsong accent with other Columbia shorts stars. Too bad his tenure at Columbia didn't coincide with El Brendel's, or I bet that Emil would've ended up portraying El's long-lost uncle at some point.

Hi Louie, I located my notes (from 1982!!) for the Columbia book and I can confirm that Emil played a Swedish-accented janitor in the two reeler RADIO ROMEO. Harry Von Zell was the star of the short. According to what I scribbled at the time while watching the film, Dick Wessel grabs Emil from out of a broom closet, mistaking Email for von Zell, whom Wessel has been chasing. Wessel realizes his mistake, and Emil responds in dialect, "Maybe you were expecting Al Yolson?" I may have a copy of the film and will check when we unpack. Pretty sure he did at least another couple Swede roles in the shorts but I'll have to keep looking through my papers (and tapes etc when I can unearth them).

According to the imdb Emil played a Swedish repairman in BLONDIE HITS THE JACKPOT, not a short but at Columbia, his primary studio in the late 1940s.
