Re: Looks like women are making good headway into film preservation

He's posted this at the 16mmfilmtalk board, too, and he's getting a more actively volatile reception there. Like here, he hasn't responded to the outrage there either. Sometimes a troll is just a troll, and it's good to have those cards on the table for the record. Rather than delete it, I'd encoura...

Re: Famous Studios Popeye Shorts coming to Blu

The level of work ostensibly done on these (4K! No other classic cartoons were given that honor...) suggests no need to approach it with trepidation or arguing - just excitement. I shudder to think they could have went the Porky route and just stuffed all the '40s and '50s Famous cartoons onto a 5-D...

Or it could be that the complaints about that earlier shitbed presentation is exactly why this one looks, well, frankly, perfect. Enough living in the past. Bring on more restored Blu-Rays.

Just one correction: there was quite a bit of digital image restoration on Kino's You Never Know Women. I know because I did it.

Robert is correct. These will not be the UCLA restorations (or the Jeff Joseph digital restorations), as most of the titles slated for this haven't been done yet. What a shame!

MAMBA (1930) Was sorely disappointed by this as both a film and a restoration. The less said, the better. How dare you critique a movie!? CINEWHINER! Bitch bitch bitch! You do nothing and contribute nothing but complaining! Snort! Oops, what was this blarfing over again? Oh, Mamba? Yeah, it sucks. ...

Glad people are enjoying this. It's indeed a fascinating film that would never have been made in America ("A black woman pulling the strings!? INDECENT!") and it was great to work with Jeff Joseph on getting this out there.

Re: Marilyn Monroe Fully-Naked Footage From "The Misfits" Uncovered? Never Publicly Shown.

Hell, she was fully nude years before in Bus Stop. Don Murray, as he relayed on Gilbert Gottfried's most recent podcast, had the greatest job in the world of making sure Marilyn Monroe's breasts weren't exposed during the shooting.

Re: Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

Not everything can be on a Blu-Ray disc . Replication costs indeed make that option very prohibitive, so companies are understandably selective. Same with restoration costs. Just DVDs on the other hand... With the amount of outright garbage being released, especially through MOD, I think there's a s...

I don't like the idea of the rightsholders having even more control over the content.

Want to watch that series/short/movie again at a later time? Too bad - it's gone.

Re: Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

It may be the future, but that doesn't make it right. Streaming is fine as an alternative for television on-demand, but it isn't for home video. It just puts even more control in the hands of the rights holders and distributors. Consumers should always have the option to own a movie to watch when th...

Re: Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

Keatonesque's thoughts are my own. Complaints about Kino's release schedule are merely annoying. So where's the vitriol for the studios that aren't putting films out and won't license them to people that will?

Re: Kino to release blu-rays/DVDs of some Paramount silents

Instead of dog-piling with the whining about whining, maybe just state the obvious. Are any of the other studios releasing newly scanned and restored silents in high-def with any kind of regularity? No. That's why Kino has to license them and do it themselves. While it can be frustrating to not get ...

Re: YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS podcast returns - Fact-Checking A

Why would anyone with disdain for Lon Chaney Jr. do podcasts about Universal horror? I completely agree. That said, I am enjoying this series (the Karloff/Lugosi series was really the only one I didn't like and I REALLY didn't like it). The Manson series in particular was extremely good. The truth ...

It's a pre-code Warner picture with Joan Blondell in it. 'Nuff said. I'd certainly welcome a million buck restoration/salvaging of something actually watchable like this. So was HAVANA WIDOWS (1933), which I watched last week. Although being 'lost' would be a cruel fate even for a disappointingly r...

I think, however, that Universal could have budgeted a bit higher for FLY SPRAY!! :D While working on the digital clean-up of early '30s films, I often see the critters flying around on shirts and jackets, and not just during outdoor scenes. It's a mark of good judgment when the artist/technician d...

Re: Charley Chase: The Hal Roach Talkies Volume One 1930-31

Roach was notoriously cheap, so always expect remnants of poor recording, bad processing, and all those sinful "density shifts." Sometimes even the most involved restorations aren't going to improve what was subpar from day one.
