Re: Netflix Burning Through Cash

In the past six months to a year, Netflix's exclusive offerings have been better than the networks and cable TV pay channels have been producing. I'm a member of the TV Academy and I get screeners at voting time. Based on what I saw, this year, Netflix was the strongest producer of all kinds of ente...

Re: Thunderbean Releases: Out of print forever?

Steve focuses on his current and new releases mostly. When he runs out of a print run, he sometimes does another one. He did that with Gulliver's Travels. But usually he uses the money to press something new. It's best to buy his titles as they are announced. The pre-riders can take a year or more o...

Re: Original Release Cut of Pardon Us 1931

The original version of Pardon Us is on this box set: https://www.amazon.com/Laurel-Hardy-Essential-Collection-Stan/dp/B005BYBZKY Thanks. I think I have that set around here somewhere. I'll dig it up. I don't care for the long version at all. I wish they had given us both versions on the blu-ray.

Original Release Cut of Pardon Us 1931

I asked this in another thread but I didn't get any answer. I got the new blu-ray of Laurel & Hardy features, but the version of Pardon Us on there is cobbled together from two completely different cuts. The music is messed up, the character of the Warden keeps changing personality, and the ending g...

Re: The MGM jail set in L&H's "Pardon Us"?

When I was a kid, this was one of my favorite L&H films but I hadn't watched it in years. I screened the new blu-ray last night and I was disappointed to discover that the film had been "restored" to a state it never existed in back then. Apparently the film was previewed at 70 minutes, but the audi...

Re: US Justice Department Revisiting the Paramount Decree

At this point theatrical is more irrelevant than it was back in those days, and with the big studios owning the means of distribution on TV and cable (and soon streaming) the whole point of this law is circumvented in practice.

I wonder if it looks different in 3D than flat. I saw it off the blu-ray on my ten foot screen and it looked great. It obviously didn't look like a modern movie, but for 100 year old footage, it was amazing. Perhaps the 3D made it easier to see the seams in the restoration.

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old

The blu-ray of this arrived and I screened it last night. People who are complaining about this film must not have seen it. It has a LOT of well restored footage that isn't digitally enhanced, and as a documentary, it is well organized and packs a wallop. The transition from the regular historical f...

Re: Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers Coming to Blu-ray & DVD Nov 20th from Kino

I watched a bit of the first disc tonight. The prints look excellent. The sound quality is meh. Most of what I listened to sounded like they were recorded by someone at home. Not audiophile by any stretch of the imagination. The quality of the musical accompaniment is hit and miss. I watched three f...

It'll be interesting to see if Popeye Ala Mode will poison the waters for further volumes in this series. It's probably the ugliest of all of the Popeye cartoons.

I screened the new UK blu-ray of this recent documentary last night and it was mind blowing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVeFBjVcglU So many amazing looking films that I've never heard of before. Re: Warner Media shutting down Filmstruck

I can tell you that Netflix will definitely not green light just anything. They are doing very well right now. If you look at any of those Netflix exclusive shows in the big billboards across the middle of your Netflix page, you'll know why. They're putting out some first class stuff in a range of d...

Re: Warner Media shutting down Filmstruck

Netflix is doing what all media content companies do to make money in the long run... they're making their own content. Those Netflix exclusives are the heart of their business model, and they're doing a very good job of it. The company I work for makes a show for Netflix. We make one for Amazon too...

Re: Warner Media shutting down Filmstruck

Restorations require an audience to support it. I think we may get a lot of HD transfers of films on the big studios' proposed streaming networks; however, the quality won't be what people come to expect on blu-ray. In fact, I think studios are backing away from blu-ray on more difficult titles beca...

Re: Warner Media shutting down Filmstruck

I don't follow your point. My point I guess is that there are multiple avenues for releasing old films. Gathering them all together into one specialized self contained library may not be the best way financially. Better to have it rolled into a bigger pool so the costs are spread across a larger gr...

There is no physical media for countless titles on Filmstruck, just as there isn't for many titles on TCM. I buy tons of blu-rays and DVDs but I enjoyed Filmstruck's library as well. It's not either-or.
