Hitler's Hollywood

I screened the new UK blu-ray of this recent documentary last night and it was mind blowing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVeFBjVcglU So many amazing looking films that I've never heard of before. There must be some archive out there restoring these, because the clips looked fantastic. It's kind ...

Re: Warner Media shutting down Filmstruck

I can tell you that Netflix will definitely not green light just anything. They are doing very well right now. If you look at any of those Netflix exclusive shows in the big billboards across the middle of your Netflix page, you'll know why. They're putting out some first class stuff in a range of d...

Re: Warner Media shutting down Filmstruck

Netflix is doing what all media content companies do to make money in the long run... they're making their own content. Those Netflix exclusives are the heart of their business model, and they're doing a very good job of it. The company I work for makes a show for Netflix. We make one for Amazon too...

Re: Warner Media shutting down Filmstruck

Restorations require an audience to support it. I think we may get a lot of HD transfers of films on the big studios' proposed streaming networks; however, the quality won't be what people come to expect on blu-ray. In fact, I think studios are backing away from blu-ray on more difficult titles beca...

Re: Warner Media shutting down Filmstruck

I don't follow your point. My point I guess is that there are multiple avenues for releasing old films. Gathering them all together into one specialized self contained library may not be the best way financially. Better to have it rolled into a bigger pool so the costs are spread across a larger gr...

What did they have that isn't on DVD? Just things I've watched and reviewed here personally: Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees Pasha's Wives Le Drame du Shanghai A Hen in the Wind The only one there that isn't on DVD appears to be Pasha's Wives, and that has aired on TCM. I never used Filmstruck, s...

There is no physical media for countless titles on Filmstruck, just as there isn't for many titles on TCM. I buy tons of blu-rays and DVDs but I enjoyed Filmstruck's library as well. It's not either-or.

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old

My wife and I are watching Victoria , and every time they insert a skyline shot, it destroys the illusion of reality in the series for us. Way too obviously a CGI imaging. That's just a function of the budgets for television. Ten years ago, it would have been much more primitive, and 50 years ago, ...

It isn't about what we like or dislike, it's about educating those who've grown up wearing blinders to our rich cultural heritage through indifference or limited exposure. And our rich current culture! Technology is a great way to turn people on to the good stuff, both new and old. It's just as mpo...

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old

Serving an audience isn't pandering. There are programs aimed at old farts, and there are programs aimed at normal people. Everybody gets some of the pie. Even though I'm an old fart, I never really cared for Lawrence Welk or Murder She Wrote, but it's fine those programs exist for the geriatric set...

Re: FINALLY Laurel & Hardy coming to blu-ray

These releases are clearly meant to capitalise on the new Bio-pic hitting mainstream cinemas. I would be very wary of the quality of the prints used....wait for reviews before purchase! I can't speak for the Roach features set, but I've seen the HD transfers of the Fox films on the Norwegian blu-ra...

Re: COPYRIGHT LAW

You're right Frame Rate. The big problem with archives is that the big studios have abrogated their responsibility to preserve their own assets by dumping their film storage on public and non-profit archives. It isn't even like they dumped an orphan on a doorstep. They still claim ownership and cont...

I wasn't going to say this, but I thought about it and I will... Companies who exploit the public domain have shot themselves in the foot by attempting to exert copyright over their restorations. They complain about public domain "pirates" "stealing" their restorations and work their customers up in...

More access is more access. If you don't care about public domain material, like the vast majority of the public, it's no big deal to let people own it instead of letting it go into the public domain like it was intended. But if you value it, you realize that the only way for this material to really...

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old

Without judging Peter Jackson's intent, there's a sizable difference between creativity in fiction and creatively restoring documentary footage. In the latter case, the choices made are subject to being scrutinized for historical accuracy. First of all, anyone who has actually made a documentary fi...

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old

That's the whole point of Jackson's argument, right, that he is putting back what the original cameras missed? My worry is that you can't put it back – what he has added relies on his own creative decision-making. Since when has film making NOT been about a director expressing his own creative deci...

There has been a second set announced for January that includes all 6 of the Fox films too. Lots of L&H coming out at once. These were released in blu-ray in Norway, but the authoring of the discs was pretty bad. Hopefully the new set will be better. For about 20 GBP for each set, it's a bargain.

Do you think the restoration effects would be less objectionable if they weren't in 3D? Also, do you think a general audience with no particular connection to archival footage would share your problems with the film?

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old

As long as the footage is preserved in its original format, it doesn't matter how it's commercially repackaged. I'll judge each reworking on its own merits. I don't know if I could sit through all the hours of raw footage from this documentary in its original state and context. But this documentary ...
